Bad Trailer Tire Fix

This is my highly dependable yard trailer. I got tired of dealing with a flat tire every time I wanted to use it. One tire had a real tiny crack in the side wall that was leaking. I ordered a pair of 20x8x8 tubes from Amazon. The wheels were in real good shape other than some weld splatter. I sanded down all the bumps and coated with some junk Rustoleum oil based paint with a brush. After checking the inside of the tire for problems I dusted the inside of the tire with baby powder then rubbed some Dawn dish detergent on the inside rim. All good to go now.

As frustrating those little shits can be to fix its even more frustrating to air up all the time too.

Shhhhh, do not tell my DW this. Her wagon need the tires fixed just like this. I've been just too busy to get into a repair like this one. I just keep airing up her tires each weekend! And I have a water trailer with one leaking too. And a wheel barrow . . . dang, now that I think about it. o_O

Nice work, Jim! The airing up hassle should be history for a long time now! Believe it or not, with all the junk I have around here, I do not have one single bumper jack! Closest I have is a big heavy handyman. Had to buy a bead breaker off some Amazon store. I don't think it will do a 6" or smaller wheel. Wasn't too long ago that I was able to use it on a 8" wheel. I felt like that was about as small as it is usable. Used it on 16" truck wheels right after I got it, and some sizes in between.

First I've heard of this technique? What is the purpose of it? To keep it kissably soft and smooth???

If that’s your pleasure LD you’ll love this technique lol. I forgot the most important step since it was only 48 degrees outside I fired up my torpedo heater and got them real warm first lol. The baby powder causes the tube to travel around the inside without bunching up while inflating. I usually fill it about half way, deflate, then fill all the way. The Dawn dish detergent lubricates the tire rim and wheel for an easy stretch.
 
Tire shops that still will install tubes used "Tire Talc". It don't have the pretty smell. Some of us have baby powder laying around from the kid days. It don't go bad unless it gets wet. Think I still have a full bottle and about a half a bottle from the early 1990's that I use installing tubes. When you're done the baby powder even kind of covers up the rubber smell from handing new tubes---LOL!
