Bolens G11XL Drive Belt ?

I bought this tractor last year & noticed a little slippage in reverse. Upon checking the belt adjustment I noticed the belt was worn & the idler wheel was rubbing the top of the frame. I ordered the belt over the winter & went to install yesterday & noticed the old belt was 1/2" wide & the replacement was 5/8" wide. Once I installed the new belt & tried several adjustments the new belt was never loose enough to prevent turning. Both belts are the same length. I put the old belt back on & adjusted the idler down slightly to clear the frame. It's mobile now but there's too much slack in the belt. I'm thinking two options. 1. Would be a 1/2" belt but shorter. 2. Would be a 5/8" belt longer. I like the idea of a 5/8" belt since it's the main drive & seems like the 5/8" is the replacement. Any ideas or experience with this problem.

Manual says the part number is 1729716 which shows it as a 5/8 X 47. I have found several times that aftermarket belts do not match up with the Bolens belts deminsion wise. Just enough difference they fit the pulleys different and don't work or not very good. Did one or both of the pulleys get changed in the past some time? Had a G16XL that had one of the weld together hub pulley deals on it. Hub was not welded dead center and the clutch pedal really bounced when engaged.

The belt came from V-Belt Supply. I've bought their replacement belts for years with no problems but it's always a possibility. I did gardening work today we have rain for the next few days I'll measure the new belt tomorrow. It's hard to tell if the idler & pulley are wrong with nothing to compare them with. The idler is 4 1/2" x 1". The pulley off the right angle drive is a bit sloppy. I'm going to order both the idler & pulley to make sure. Thanks Roger

Roger I checked my invoice to see what I bought. It's showing the belt 46" where did you get 47" as the length. Here's what I got.

This was a post about five years ago on a thread by Chieffan posted from Classic Bolens on this same issue.

This is one of those oddball size belts that can be tough to replace.

Bolens part # should 1729716

Length is 46.6" width is 43/64" (HB), Thickness is 7/16". It's wider than a standard A series or 4L belt and a 5/8" or B series belt is too wide and too thick. You may try a 1/2 x 46" or 1/2 x 47", but in the end you may well be better off finding a NOS Bolens belt for it.

Abolens belt 4 deminsion check listed it as a 5/8" X47" but it could be wrong also. The manual I have don't give the actual demensions of the felt, just the part number. If I remember right I got my melt from one of the suppliers for the site. Hope you can get it figured out as they are a great tractor. Us mine a lot for tilling and the tiller don't push the tractor.

It doesn't look like any of the specs are clear on which belt is best. I'm going to order a 5/8x47. I also seen your old post about your deck. I have the same deck. Thanks for showing the model number.

I have another good deck that came on a QT16 that has a bad rear end. Parting the tractor out, may sell the deck separate or part it out also. Would like to trade some deck parts for a thrower gear box for same tractor.
