well... after a fruitless "search" here because the search decided to ignore the "317" part of a search for "Deere 317" I'm asking something I hope hasnt been said 10000 times already.

I went garage sale-ing over the weekend, and discovered a Deere 317 that needs help. The tractor itself seems pretty decent, though oily all over under the hood.
Seller has a deck to go with, he hasnt used it, he mostly used it with a snow plow blade. past owner said deck needed work, that's all current owner knows. Said it "lost power" and he heard people say it may have blown the rod on 1 side but hasn't had the gumption to check, (didn't seem like he had any idea how to)
Missing filler cap on rear diff, seller says it has been indoors, til he drug it out for the garage sale.
It has 2 sets of hydro disconnects on front, is missing grill but pretty much all there otherwise. has the side covers.

I have a known good Magnum 18 in the shed that I know would bolt in place of the existing original KT17, but I have been bitten by that bug before.... same model and series engine, I happen to either have or know where to get one "just like it", and get bitten by differing throttle setup, possibly different exhaust configuration, different length and diameter crank, etc.......
Several years ago I had a 314 that came to me blown up and unfortunately due to "life" at the time, left here the same way. That one only collected dust while it was mine. How similar is that, to this 317? I ask because I have heard that a 316 with a Kohler and a 316 with an Onan are different in more ways than just the engine. Asking wondering what attachments would interchange, etc. how many 300 series tractors did they have back in the 70s/80s?

after all that, what would a good reasonable price to pay for this machine??? (I'm going it looking at this machine as most certainly needing an engine transplant, and maybe more) Like all of you, I need another tractor like a hole in the head..... He has his asking price, I have a number in my head I'd maybe be willing to give for it.

that Magnum in the shed? I have it cuz they are tough to find, and I have a great snow blower tractor in the form of a GT19 Ariens.... debating whether to pick up the Deere and try to swap that engine in, or hold put and keep that Mag as a spare for the snowblower tractor...... which also currently runs a KT (series II on that one, though)

Only thing I know about a 317 is ! I bought a snow thrower from a fella that had the thrower on his 317 and didn’t like the thrower. So I bought the thrower and put it on my 140H3 JD. Worked great.

Most attachment were suppose to fit, so you could trade in your tractor, keep your attachments and they would fit on the new tractor. Just what I read somewhere.

The 314 and 317 are very similar, the only real main differences I know of is the engines and their mountings and the 317 is a H2, while the 314 is a H1. The 316's are very different, the Kohler one is basically a re-badged 300. The Onan powered one is like a stripped down 318. All the 300's can share the same front implements, the difference is in the rear's

If I remember tomorrow, I can measure the crankshaft on a KT17 so you can compare to a Magnum 18. I still have a crank and muffler to a KT17, so I can snap a pic of the muffler too. I think it would be an easy swap though. As to price, not really sure not seeing it, but I'd hate to give $300 in it's current state.

Well Dan, are you saying that all KT 17s had the same crank dimensions? Or is yours off of a Deere 317?

As with all other engines I have dealt with engines of the same basic model and series can be way different. I'd be surprised if all KT 17s had the same crank. A different pto end of the crank is usually what beats me up on engine swaps, occasionally it's the throttle and choke hookup configuration between 2 engines. I jump in with both feet thinking I have an engine "JUST like that" and it winds up the same in brand, only.

I do know that in general the magnum 18 and KT 17 (series II anyway) are essentially the same engine except that the kt runs points and the magnum don't.

I have 2 other complete direlicts at the barn, a Husqvarna that needs a replacement for it's dead Courage, and a deere LT166 that I have had running but needs tires and a whole lot of other stuff. I'm wondering if the tires from the Husqvarna would fit the Deere and combine those 2.

I'm thinking this 317 might be more worthwhile than either of those 2.

Tractor is still there, idea of getting it is on hold since I found this bobcat walk behind. I have a neighbor that has a 318 that I didn't know that he had, I told him about the 317 and he wants me to go get it.... Didnt sound like he wanted me to go get it "for him"..... Don't have any time to mess with another project right now. Would have to get rid of a few others if I were to do so...
