Not sure why, but I brought this home today.
Roper GT18. Tractor Data says 1984-1988. Not sure what year since I haven’t found a breakdown on serial numbers yet. 2948s00012. GT18FR.
18 horse Briggs. horizontal twin. 6 speed transaxle.
It’s got to have the biggesr grill of anything I’ve owned.
The tins are in good shape other than the extra holes drilled in them for the tool holders.

I was told it smokes. No battery in it so I couldn’t check it out.
If need be I have a horizontal Briggs twin to put in it.

Looks like a good potential Rick. You never know some of these little LT’s are good back up grass cutters. I got a kick out of the tool holders. No tool box needed on this rig.

Couldn’t stand the dirt. Pulled the hood and side panels off. Removed a ton of dirt/oil from everything.
Installed a battery and it would turn over but not getting any gas. Would fire off on carb spray. Installed a small temporary gas tank and she fired up and ran. Smoked really bad and was puking oil out the crankcase breather really bad. That explained the layer of grime all over everything. Plus it was making a suspicious knocking noise. It was only running on the left cylinder. The right side was cold. I went ahead and drove it. The transaxle seems ok. The mower deck ran and cut nice.
I have a twin cylinder Briggs to put in it,,,,,Maybe. Not sure if I want to on this unit.
I’ll push it into a corner and think about it.

FYI.,,,,I Scrapped this one out. Will be keeping the transaxle, wheels/tires.

It was in decent shape but an old roper isnt worth the effort to restore. Might’ve made a good work horse if the engine wouldn’t have been bad!

They all can't be saved, Rick. Since it looked like a GT from the rear wheels did it also have a Ross steering box? that would be a keeper too!

No Ross. I would have kept it.
Keeping the 3 speed with dual range.

Oddly enough if it were the Sears twin it probably would appeal to more people. Roper name just doesn't have the recognition.

You are right.

I like the sears st16 I have. it’s a roper built unit. It’s a good runner. Someone before me dumped a lot of money into it and I picked it up cheap with a bad solid state module.

I know where there's a twin to that tractor I pass daily on my way to work, with the rear end Missing and on blocks. so in relation to that, this machine can be seen from IL rt 49. Well technically rt 45/52 since it's north of IL 116. It's about halfway to work for me. Probably 45 min NW of you. Decent looking machine besides missing rear. Been sitting in this spot for a few years untouched at least.
