Engine swap question.

If I had a John Deere 316 onan engine tractor. Will a kohler K321 fit in it. ?

You would probably have to drill new holes to mount the motor. The 316 with the K341 has the motor mounted in a cradle that is sitting on rubber isolators, the Onan versions mount on a plate attached to the frame. The early 316K (which I have) are known as closed frame tractors, the later Onan ones are known as open frame. The way you can tell is by looking at the rear frame, the early ones have a plate across the back, the later ones don't.

With minor mods, yes. The driveshaft will require a flywheel adapter to fit it to the Kohler flywheel. I did the opposite to a Massey 1650, going TO an Onan from a K341. I spun my own adapter out of aluminum on my lathe.

I have a flywheel and the adapter that I removed from a JD K341 that I put in a Simplicity. I also have the crankcase.

Hi Noel if you wanted to stay with 18 hp there is a kit to install a B&S V twin 18 hp but I'm thinking if one found a good B&S 16 / 18 hp engine it could be installed fairly easy I removed a 16 hp Onan and installed 16 p twin V B&S 16 hp and I am so happy with it 99% better than the Onan same hp about a 1/3 less fuel and it starts right off everytime I want to use it

Do those B&S engines have a 10/15 amp battery charger Gary ? So it would operate the electric clutch.

Hi Noel yes most are 15 amp I would say it would be rare for a Twin V to have anything other I'm talking about the Vanguard series engines
