hydrostatic Drive question

The 990 Viking I purchased in December, moves very slow in reverse, forward is OK. I have checked the fluid level and that is right on, I have noticed that once in a while the tractor will move fast in reverse but only for about one revolution of the wheels. Any thoughts on this as to the problem, what to check or probable causes?

I have a White 1655 that is the same way. Moves fine forward but back is real slow. I think it is in the linkage, wore place(s), etc. Going to part it out so not going to worry about it.

My Craftsman GT 5000 is the same painfully slow in reverse I think it was designed that way so you wouldn't back over someone, check the linkage may be it could be adjusted

The linkage is probably set up so that if you speed up reverse you'll slow down forward. And yes, it's probably that way because some lose some coordination when backing up, even vehicles.

Thank you all for the response, I downloaded a manual so I am going to check out the linkages then make some adjustments today. My reverse is so slow I couldn't back over a snail and if I am on a slight hill it won't move at all.

Have you checked your tranny fluid level or leaks anywhere. If your leaking somewhere they loose pressure or sometimes suck air. Lift cylinder would be first to check. If it’s been sitting awhile the exposed push rod will sometimes get rusty or pitted. When you use the lift that shaft seal will tear or get pinched. Your linkage like mentioned could use some attention because they are sensitive.

Yes, the tranny fluid was the first I checked, all OK. I followed the manual direction for adjusting the linkages and it made a big difference. The linkages are wore at every pivot point so there is quite a bit of play. I was able to move a lot of snow today, for now I am happy, this Spring or Summer I will work on the linkages.
