Got one to work on! Has a B&S 20 HP Vanguard. Issue is it runs fine for about 30 seconds, then puffs out black smoke like it's flooding. Engine #'s are:
Model: 351777
Type: 1114-E1
Code: 98100711

If I am reading the code right, this is '98 model tractor. I pulled the plugs and they are BLACK. Gonna do some homework on this engine, probably pull the valve covers and check in there. May have to pull the carb and see what it looks like.

The exhaust push rod is aluminum, intake is steel. Don't know what causes them to bend, but it happens. Lash is only 0.005", so if things got warm enough, lash could be too tight.

The air filter is oil soaked too. Could be limiting air intake. Once I check the valves, I'll fire it up with out the air filter and see what it does. Reason to check the valves is it is hard to get it turning over with the starter, have to hit the key several times before it rolls over. Since this is nearly 20 years old, it's probably had a lot of hours put on it. Looks like and hour meter on it, but haven't noticed any #'s on it yet (digital)

Got out early this morning and pulled the valve covers, no bent push rods thankfully! But they were loose, 0.010-0.012" bot intake and exhaust. Reset them and put in some better pulgs and it fired up once I put some gas in it! LOL Did a tuneup, oil change, all filters and new plugs and it runs decent for it's age. Customer will be happy!

Well, he brought it back! No start again, but this time it wouldn't engage the starter. After an hour or more of testing wiring as I could, I noticed the PTO wiring had a splice in it. Pulled those wires back through the frame and found a wire loose and partly stripped. A closer look found the other end. Twisted them together and the starter worked. After putting on 3 new connectors to get rid of the bare wires, I tied them back so they wouldn't get into the drive belt again. All is good now.

The Onan M43 I am on also says to set the valve lash cold. 0.005 on the intake and 0.013 on the exhaust. Guess they want the exhaust more as it probably get a lot hotter than the intake. Hope to finish it tomorrow evening. Have to have the Historical Bldg. open 10 to 2 for Homecoming tomorrow.
