John Deere: Just plain disgusting

It is not just John Deere. Case IH is the same, along with most other major manufacturers. Can you believe it cost $600 to replace an alternator plus the Case IH diagnostic bill just to run the PTO on a mid sized IH tractor? Crazy.
 
It getting where in the small engine repair field soon we will have to have a code reader but not any code reader a reader for each engine and it like $200 each and this is because Fuel Injection is starting to become a bigger thing.

I've read that OBD 2 scanners work on the john deere for pulling codes. Not sure if this is true or not? Dad's x590 is fuel injected (pretty sweet BTW). I'll have to look at the ECU and see if there is an OBD port on it. It's under warranty for 5 years/500 hours so its good for awhile.

Likely voids your warranty. How to help agriculture JD.

I was at a buddy's last night (at a distance) to see his new tractor. I didn't see the JD story until this morning. I hope his Massey isn't the same BS.

On the big JD tractors, a code reader means nothing. JD claims ownership of all software meaning even if you have to replace a small safety switch, they have to come out and reset programming of ECU or tractor won't run. There have been a handful of guys breaking into ECU's but it seems to need specialized PC programming.
 
This is why pre-emissions 90's early 2000's tractors are soaring in price. People don't want tractors they can't work on. New equipment is basically becoming lease only, why would anyone buy them outright. Our newest tractor is a 2014 AGCO Challenger, never had any issues working on it ourselves. There is some computer stuff you just can't do without the software, but that's no different than a few tractors from the 1980's we have.

500 hours doesn't sound right to me that only 12.5 40 hour weeks
 
When I first got my LGT 165 Ford, we put about 100 hours a year on it, for the first three to four years. We’ve had it fifteen years now. It did grass cutting in two locations, tilled a few gardens spring and fall, did the snow removal, some driveway leveling and other little jobs.

Now I’ve got 6 more tractors with different attachments which do some of the work. So the LGT 165 is sort of retired. It still does some snow removal and tilling. It gets about 10 hours a year, give or take an hour or so.
