Just can't help it, Bidding on more Tractors

A local guy's collection is being auctioned off and Dad and I had to bid on some parts/project tractors. They are a John Deere L, JD unstyled B, and 2 JD H's. We should know tomorrow evening if we win the bids or not.

Only won 1 out of 4 tractors we bid on. Got the 1940 John Deere L. The pickup dates are Nov. 10th and 11th.

I've heard of it, but I don't think I am doing it right unless the 12 steps are all buying a tractor and then you repeat.

Got it home. Engine turns over freely and seems to have some compression. Only missing the carb. Came with some of the pieces I need for the sickle mower also.

Looks like 2 different sized tires on the rear or is it the angle of the picture or maybe the picture taker had his head at an angle?? Is that a JD engine or a Hercules, that will keep you busy for a few days

This picture takers head is always a little off angle and also GoPro cameras can distort things a bit. Both rears are 7.50-22 but different brands. The one side is flat and completely shot. The engine is a Hercules NXB with the bolt on bell housing. The later Deere engine was a one-piece casting. If this engine will run I may put it in my 1938 Unstyled L for now, as long as everything fits, while I put the original back together. The '38 had the Hercules NXA engine which is a 3" bore and the NXB had a 3.25" bore. The LA tractors grew to 3.5" bore but all of them had a 4" stroke.

Turned the rear wheels around to narrow up the tread width so it would fit down the ramps. Pumped up the tires and got it unloaded. Set the engine down by the shop while I clear a spot for it.

Touched up the points in the mag and now have good spark. Pulled the plugs and looked in the cylinders. I think the PO must have had this opened up because it is really clean inside. Also found it has .020 oversized pistons.

Shot some starting fluid in the cylinders and got a pop or 2 out of it. Still trying to find a carb for it. I guess I will try the one from our 1945 L and see if it will work. I'll probably set the engine back in the frame to make things easier.

Pulled the carb off the 1945 L engine and it bolts right on. If I can get some time this weekend, I may try to get the engine back on the frame and see if I can get it to run.

Got the engine set back in the frame. Found some round rod and bent up a hand crank. Just need to drill for the cross pin.

Played around with the L some today. Need to check the valves because its not sucking thru the carb like it should when I crank it over.

It would be nice if that's all it is. I think I will pull the side cover and see if they are all moving/closing. May have to pull the head to see what's up.
