Keyway wear

I noticed my wheelhorse C-120 rear wheel was not right and I thought it was the axle bearing but it the hub had too much play come to find out it was the key way is worn. What the best way to fix it ?

I don't know how many WH hubs I've seen cross drilled for a bolt and nut. I would like to learn something better.

I have filed/ground down the next size larger key till things fit snug. Is it the hub or axle keyway wallowed out....or both?

Get a new key and see how much wear is on the axle and hub. Keys are usually softer than the axle and hub.

I had one in a Bush Hog JB1 and I machined a piece of brass into a 1/4" key. I laid it into the worn axle keyway, then welded in the worn away walls. Removed brass key, then hand filed the welds down till the hub fit snugly. I had a good hub to replace the also worn hub, so this made it good as new. The brass doesn't melt away during welding, so this works super.

Stick with 7018 rod.

For those that want to know the key on the c-120 is #9 woodruff key or 3/16-3/4 which I can’t seem to find local

Have you tried Ace Hardware? I know they have some woodruff keys at the store by me. Maybe they can get one.

this is pretty typical on a wheelhorse, have to check the flange bolts regular like.
If your hub has only one flange bolt add another 90 deg from the other. They are hardened bolts too.
WH added the second bolt in the 70s.
Also get a 8 point socket to tighten them. Ive found using a wrench you cant torque them down enough.
