i was down at dad’s today digging through the barn and setting some engines so I could build a new steel shelf to set them on since the old one was nearly collapsed.

Sat out a k181s from a 110, 2 k341 from cub 169s I believe , k301 from a cub 128, and a HH100 from a sears. Along with my collection of Tecumseh mini bike engines.

Random guy pulls up and says he will give me 500 for all of them. I laughed and said I’m sure you would. Then he said well I’ll give you 100 for the k181s. I said no thanks.

My dad got mad at me. I told him I thought they were all worth more than that. Was I wrong? Plus really don’t want to sell any of them as they aren’t getting any easier to find. All these came out of parts tractors we bought for 100 to 200 each.

I can't find em when I need to, but when I find myself with extras and want to make room, nobody wants to give me squat for them. When I was looking for a K341 all I could find was a block here, a crank there, a head from another seller, it would have cost me a grand to build one from pieces and all of the pieces used, at that.
I ended up robbing pieces and scrapping the rest of that cub 1650.

This is what I was thinking. I saw a short block a couple months ago for a k341 that was listed for 450. Not sure if it sold or not.

I would keep them unless you can get a fair price on a few for someone that needs them. Usually when a haggler wants everything he’s going to resell for the profit he didn’t want you to have.

Im repairing a K301 out of a Cub 1250 I got for a song with deck and plow because the governor rod broke. The PO said he just had the short block rebuilt for $600. one year prior.

I have no idea what the K181 would be worth or how much demand there is for that model I do know the is lots of demand for the K301'2 and the K341's I'd say more so for the K341's lots and lots of K301's were built and used not as many K341's . So I'd keep them and if someone needs any one of them to repair upgrade a project and is willing to pay a fair price then sell, just my thinking and I guess that's why I have a bunck of Tecumseh 10 - 12 - & 16 HP a number of B&S's and Kohlers also sitting in my shop

thing is those older engines are only worth much if a person needs a particular engine for a resto project... the K engine often have differant output shafts according to the model of tractor they belong to and/or what kind of pto they require.... and if they need to be shipped any distance the value drops in a hurry. Plus the fact that the k341s like to throw rods they are boat anchors unless I can hear them running... Im sure there is still people that will pay top dollar but in my experience used K series engines are generally not a good investment.

I have a nice k301 that come out of an early Cub 127, complete with starter and manual pto, runs well and very quietly so that one I would say is $200 or maybe more to a Cub collector, but to anyone else its $150 at best.

I have a k181 in my RaM but thats a pro built puller engine with a small block chevy piston and alot of custom work, still probably doesnt have 100 hrs on it... I doubt it would bring $500 if I was to sell it and put the original k161 back in the tractor.

When the K301 blew in my 7012 I looked for an engine for about 6 or 8 months before the ad popped up for the k341 a guy about 35 miles south was parting out a JD 316. It had the wide base so I could use K301 oil pan but I changes the stator and the flywheel as the bolt patterns for drive shaft were different. One of these days I will rebuild the K301. Cost me $200.
