Hey gents like the title says….went in the shop the other day and noticed the smell of fuel and one of my 1655 Massey‘s leaked fuel by into the base. I suspect a needle and seat issue everything is original as far as I know. I ordered a rebuild kit off of eBay may be good bad or ugly not sure. It came in today I may pull it apart in the next day or two just want some feedback and opinions from you guys.
And go…….

Also be sure the float isn't tweaked to where it rubs sides of the bowl. If it has the "DD" carb, if it has the composite float, they can get to where they absorb enough fuel that they won't float high enough to shut down the needle to seat or become partially detached from hinge part and rub bowl. Only option then is to find an aftermarket brass float assembly.

Great thanks Daniel. It is a DD carb. I never had an issue before with either one of them. Of course I just changed the oil & filter a couple of months ago lol.

Doesn’t look like too bad of a kit for a cheap China kit. I find a lot of China eBay sellers ship from the port of Vancouver now instead of all the way from China only took two weeks to get here lol. Anybody have any experience with these kits? I see the needle appears to be rubber tipped can be good or bad I guess. I really hate having to tear apart a so-called good carb but obviously there’s an issue.

Noticed a little puddle still after the fuel shut off. Shone the light up underneath found it seeping around the grommet a little bit. A little background this is the tank that Daniel was nice enough to give it to me. I installed a new valve and grommet from flea bay. Was never an issue for the first six months or so. The last time I filled the tank up a little higher maybe the extra little bit of weight was enough. Bought the grommets in a pack of 10 gonna try another one. These ones don’t have the enlarged lip on the inner end but they seem to fit snug enough we’ll see.

I’ve been seeing some small differences in a few things when it comes to the measurements of something. Most of these things are from China...not surprised.

MF 1650 had a kohler k341 16hp engine. The MF 1655 had an Onan B43M 16 hp twin engine. Plus the front and rear tires on the 1655 were bigger than the 1650 tractor tires Doug.
Yup that's right Noel

The numbering for that series was first two were horsepower the third number was a 0 for manual trans and 5 for hydro. The second was 0 for single or a 5 for a twin hence there were only 1655 & 1855's

Well all right guys time to get back to this. Finally finished block one of my machinist course the other day. Took the exhaust and carb off today so can I take it into work put the kit in it tonight. It does have the plastic float Daniel but it does seem to be moving freely. I’m kind of new diving into these carbs as a newbie any advice I greatly appreciate it. The only thing that changed before this happened is that I filled the fuel tank probably 3/4 of the way just wondering if it had anything to do with the extra weight of the fuel in the tank? Sounds weird but I have heard people suggest that before too.

I would like to think that fuel tank head pressure wouldn't cause a leaking needle/seat, but I sure have reservations about float/needle assemblies that have that little spring that has to compress to put full pressure on the needle into the seat. I'm so used to old school carbs in the automotive world that the needle rides directly against the tang on the float. Much easier in my opinion.

I may have had that issue you are describing, Jason, back in 2015 when I re-powered the MF12G with a 13 hp Honda clone. I wanted to use the MF fuel tank. It sat 4 or 5 inches higher than the tank on the new engine. It kept flooding at low rpms even just off idle. If I didn't shut off the fuel valve when stopping the engine, it would leak gas, and it even leaked into the crankcase. Those Honda and clone engines have a spring between the float tang and the needle. I'm sure there is a certain head pressure that would compress that spring, but I have no real evidence that is what the problem was. I ended up putting the fuel tank that came with the new engine back on. Haven't had any real issues since but if I let it idle 4 or 5 minutes it still starts flooding a bit. I just don't let it idle much and no problems then.
