No winches yet. The stump puller tractor has a winch on the front, to lift and lower the plow. I have used it in the past, number of years ago.

You’re rural, I would be using dynamite. 1/4 stick of 75% would pop those stumps out quick and cheap!
When I had my vendors permit sold lots of stick powder for stumping. A case was $120 and about 120 sticks of 1” per case would pop plenty of stumps

Can you even buy it anymore without rigorous checks?

My grandfather talked about buying it at the hardware store to blow rocks when hand digging graves. He worked at a cemetery for many years.

In Canada you can. As a vendor I used to issue 30 day user permits, now the permit is issued by local police department to anyone who requires powder for various purposes ie: prospecting, land clearing, demolition
One client I would procure a case of black powder annually for his cannon which he would fire on occasion for entertainment

Learned something new today! Thanks for sharing that.

Looks like here you need to go through the ATF and obtain a permit for personal use and can make up to 6 purchases a year. They can inspect your storage site, ect at anytime.

My grandfather always talked like it was just on the shelf at the hardware store where anyone could just buy it.

Nothing planned. The owner just likes getting the dead stuff cleared out. He has enough land that the both of us could burn dead wood for the rest of or lives. And never run out. I could spend every day there for years and never see the end of dead wood. And what I mean about dead wood is. The trees that die normally and the ones blown over by wind.
Some of what he’s doing is around his cottage and barn.

My Dad grew up on a small farm in Nebraska. They got all of their firewood from the windbreak that grew on the north and west side of the farmstead. He once told me a humorous story about splitting wood with a blasting wedge.

with no winches, that's some serious power and bite in the ground, shear force!
