Modded Manual Tire Changer

I grabbed a tire changer at Princess Auto to get the measurements off of and then added a top swing arm and duckbill to make it easier. I have lots of 2" & 1 1/4" pipe around from oil tanks. (I pump and remove oil tanks on the side). I knew the bead breaker was a weak point so I used a piece of an old truck leaf spring & 4" channel on mine. Other than 20 bucks Canadian for the duck bill it was just my time & paint. I wouldn't have bothered making my own as theirs was only 70 bucks on sale but knowing they were weaker & since I had the materials I figured I might as well save 70 bucks lol

Here it is fastened to the hitch of the truck rather than drilling holes in the shop floor. This piece is actually the bar for my homemade Hitch extender I just added a longer piece of 2 inch square tubing to the back to slide into the tire changer. The way it sits here, there’s actually a little bit of tension pushing down from the weight of the truck. The bar will flip the other way as well, but if you have to walk over it it’s easier at this level.

My shop/garage has a rock floor so I jut augured a post hole down about 30", formed a 2" sq./ with 2X6 & poured it full of concrete. Set the J bolts where I needed them and bolted the tire changer down level with the floor. Always there and ready when/if I need it. Be a good way to hold it solid if you can't anchor it down.

Nice work. I was lucky about 30 years ago. Local high school was throwing out an old Coates manual changer.

There was one of those on Kijiji here last week for 100 bucks but I rarely use one I didn't bother. If I wouldn't have just built this one I'd probably have grabbed it.
