I've never been real familiar with gilson stuff other than some gilson minibikes from the 70s

I have to say, what I like most about this tractor is the access for maintaining it. The rear body lifts up like the hood giving full access to the trans. I'd say very innovative, shame the modern companies haven't figured this out yet....

Were Simplicity, Wards, Allis, and Gilson all the same at one time, they seem to look very similar?

No.....AC & Simplicty were much the same and Gilson made Montgomery Wards and some FORDS.
