I didn’t want to hack Doug’s thread on digital calipers so I started another one. I got these today. A function I never realized is when you take a measurement you can find the mm, decimal, and fraction just by pushing the same button without re-measuring. They were $42.99 marked down to $29.99 then they offer a $10. coupon so I paid $19.99 plus tax. They came with a battery installed plus two extra batteries and a tiny screwdriver to open the battery compartment. Here is the link.

Wouldn't have been a hack Jim, but those are nicer than the ones I got! Mine came with a little phillips screwdriver too, but don't know what for.

I have a set of "Max-Cal. Whoever they were. Made in Japan I think. Had them well over 35 years and remember buying them off a Snap -on truck. These too have a button to switch from fraction to metric. But uses a small display. Also has automatic shut off after a few minutes. Batteries hold up so well I really don't remember putting them in to often.

Since you bought them off a Snap-On truck, do you have them paid off yet, Bill? :D :D

Kinda strange back then is that Snap On dealer sold off- brand tools. Even remember buying a "made in Taiwan" 3/4 hp bench grinder which I still have to this day. At least 40 some years old. So I don't know if Corporate Snap-On really liked dealers selling tools other than theirs.

I knew the Snap-On truck dealer from the early 70's up until about 1980 when he retired. He got mad at me that I bought a few tools from the MAC tools truck rather than his. I told him that they were more affordable and had better payment schedules. He still didn't like it---LOL! Still use a MAC click 1/2" drive torque wrench I bought off that truck in 1977. Still have a MAC steering wheel, vibration damper puller too.

The last thing I got from a tool truck was a Viking 4 ton floor jack back in spring of 2001. Didn't know him at all. Not a brand specific tool truck. He called and said "I know you letter a lot of cars at the speedway. Can you make me In Memory of Dale Earnhardt stickers?". I said yes but due to trademarks I can't charge for them. Went ahead and made him some anyway and he said looks like your shop needs a good floor jack. He unloaded it and left! Still works great.

I don't know if it is the same Chinese company, but the 4 post car lift I bought almost two years ago was Viking brand.

I was using my caliper today…it was not working at first,,some corrosion on battery contact. Cleaned it up and fine but now I’ve decided not to leave battery in when not in use…my battery has a sliding cover so no tool required

I always use a fine layer of dielectric grease on dry cell batteries to keep them from getting corroded.

A lot if the old Taiwan items were reliable back then.
