Wednesday, the neighbor at work came over and showed me this picture and asked if I knew what it was.

Yep, 882, a diesel. A guy he works with was selling it. I went to look at it today and brought it home. My first diesel of any kind, and my first MTD built GT. I have wanted one ever since I found out they existed. At first the guy said $800, then when I got there, he said it needed more work than he originally thought, he would take $600. It’s rough, but runs good. The hour meter shows 461 hours, but I don’t think it works. Grill and side panels are missing, it needs a seat, and front tires, one goes flat within 20 minutes. 2 problems he pointed out, when you try to start it, you have to turn the key switch on and off a few times before it will crank, and when you idle it down it doesn’t shut off, he would just turn the PTO on to stall it. He said it was like that for the 8 years he had it.

This guy has another older Cub Cadet for sale too. He wasn’t sure what model it is, but he said it has a metal seat and skinny rear tires. He’s going to get me pictures when he gets it home, it is in his buddies garage right now.

Sweet! I found an owners manual for it. But it's too big to upload here. Here's a link to it:

And here's a link to a service manual for slae:

Are you a member over a Only Cub Cadets? They have a SM for that D600B engine in their technical files. Way too big to upload here.

Thanks Kenny. Yes, I’m a member there.
That’s on my list of tractors to find one day.
600 is a steal! They show up here on Craigslist in that condition for 1200+
I have been looking for 5 years for one in my price range. There are two on marketplace right now, a 782D and a 1512, both are over $2000, one closer to $3000. They are nice, but that’s still a lot. I don‘t think I have ever seen one for less than $1500.
Nice find and would be fun working on. Could the other one be an Original with fenders!
I’m hoping it’s either one of them or a 70. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.

Be sure to keep up with the 'correct' oil for this engine. Many of the Japan diesels use 10W30. The Rotella T4 10W30 diesel oil is ideal for these machines.

Additionally, be sure to keep the radiator fins and screens clean with the up-most-care. Keep clean the air filter too. Any body panel screens/vents keep clean. Why all this fuss? If diesels run too hot, you'll be replacing the head gasket and many hours of down time and fussing finding parts.

There is a website called KubotaBooks. Its a great resource to find all kinds of manuals and machine brochures.

Likewise there is the Cub Cadet Manuals site too.
Ops Manual
Cub Cadet Specialties Manuals
Service Manual

Those two places shouldn't have that manualslib.com hyperlink on every page nor the malware scripts found in off sites like that.

The lowest Kubota manual machine number I have is the D1403.

If you have difficulty finding Kubota D600-B parts on the MTD side, then look at Walker Manufacturing that makes zero-turns. A few of their machines use this same engine. https://www.walker.com/hubfs/PDF/7000-1.pdf

Diesels are dependable machines. Upkeep is simple, just keep at it. ;) I love my Yanmar diesel. Once you go diesel, and the way they sip fuel carefully, you'll love how much more hours of run time you get on a tank of fuel. Seafoam for the diesel fuel is great stuff to use. This was the original use for Seafoam. I tried the PowerService (or whatever they call it) and it didn't work at all.

Parts for the engine itself are found though an industrial engine place. Kubota people know nothing about that engine. Any outside added on parts are through MTD and most are obsolete. MTD gets the bare engine and they do the mods, add on's etc. Been through all this with a 1512. Heck of a good engine and had no issues with it. Alternator, cooling fan idler pulley, etc.

Great info, thanks guys.

I cut grass with it for about 2 hours today. It did good, cut nice and I didn’t have any issues. The temp gauge stayed around halfway or less most of the time. It started creeping up when I was almost done, I stopped and cleaned the leaves off the radiator and it was fine after that. Before I use it much more I’m going to look it over, change all fluids and filters, check the driveshaft. Any other suggestions?

I would like to get one eventually. Gotta see what kind of work it’s going to need before I start spending money on extra stuff though.

I have a complete 3 point off a White 1655, built by MTD same era as your MTD 882 Cub. Could be a chance that it would fit. Built by same specs but with heavier material. Would sell the complete unit less the top link.

I gave it a bath yesterday. Looks a little better, now it needs a grill, side panels and a coat of wax. I’m going to change the oil tomorrow, then I might put the plow on and work on the driveway a little.

That seat has seen some extensive use. And new seats today are price-sticker-shock compared to pre-2018 prices. The newer seats are cheaply made and rarely list UV protection.

Now, I've looked at Marine boating seats, their prices are very reasonable, UV protection, better durability, and better warranty.

On the tractor forums, people have swapped over to the Marine grade seats. Plus the swivel base option can be added for easy on-off the machine or to help prevent neck strain looking backwards. ;)

To keep with the machines color, this is the basic Wise Marine seat offering. It also folds down.
Robot or human?

If you plan on plenty of seat time on the Cub, get one like this for more comfort.

Over the top comfort. :)

For a lawn tractor of Compact tractor, a high back seat is now $200 at the TSC or farm box stores. The Marine seats offer more options, more colors, more durability.

I've not seen any 'yellow' colors in the Wise Marine offerings. Otherwise, the Red, Green and Black sure line up well with most tractor brands.
