Picked up these 2 JD Rider Remnants

Got these from the old mower shop thats being torn down. Price was right, FREE, so I couldn't pass them up. The L110 is missing the carb and the LA 145 has no rear axle. Both engines turn over, but I have no idea of condition. I'll do some investigating and see what is left.

I spent a little time on the briggs twin in the LA145. The air intake had some rainwater in it, so I pulled the plugs and shot some WD-40 and oil in the cylinders. I turned it over by hand to verify that both pistons were going up and down, which they were. I then removed the rocker covers and the valve train looks good and moves as it should. Stuck my thumb over both spark plug holes and got good compression. Had to stop working on it while a heavy rain came through and now its getting dark. The starter is missing so I will need to spin it over with a drill to check for spark next. I see starters can be had for $35-$40.

I think I will swap out a carb from one of my CV15/16 engines to test the L110 out and if its good just order up a carb for it.

I was able to use our big 1/2" electric hand drill to turn the briggs twin over and check for spark. Both cylinders had spark and everything else seems to check out so I think I will order a starter for this engine and see if it will run.

Myself, I'd gleam the engines for better equipment!
Thats the plan. I now have 2 spare Kohler cv16 engines that can easily be swapped into my john deere GT225's or LX255. The 22 hp Briggs could be swapped into the Craftsman GT6000 snowblower tractor or a GT225 if I can find a blower for it. Lots of options as long as they check out O.K. The rest of the parts can be scrapped or try to sell.

Got the Briggs twin running. It is smoking a little, but I think it has some oil in the muffler. I'll get the shroud installed and run it longer and see if that clears up the smoke. It was a little risk buying a starter first, but I feel better about it now.

Purrs like a kitten. I too wouldn’t worry about a little puff of smoke. I know this is a debatable use of a fix. I have had three good runners that smoked lightly on startup or a quick throttle down. It took awhile but adding MMO to both the gas and oil fixed them. I understand if it’s a serious problem it won’t work but for something minor I’m a believer.

Worked on the John Deere L110 today. After finding all of the safety switches and get them in the right position I finally got power to the starter. I kept turning the key back and forth to the start position I would get a bunch of clicks and then the engine would turn over a couple times. I finally pulled the starter and found it was hard to turn. I got it to spin a few times just jumping direct to it, but it sounded bad. I pulled the starter apart and found one magnet loose and broken into 3 parts. I pulled a starter from another engine and got it cranking good. I threw the new cab on, hood up a remote tank, and got it fired up. It smoked for a bit and then cleaned up pretty good. It was probably from all of the oil I shot in the cylinder when I brought it home. Its noisy and sound like valve train to me. I need to pull the valve cover off and check it out. I think these engines have hydraulic lifters which might be sticky causing the noise. We'll see what I find when I open it up.
