Oh no here I go again just bought another tractor it is a Shaw duall model R8 with a Wisconsin engine on it. Bought it as a non-runner as the engine has no spark looking to dive into the Magneto and hopefully get this going. The tractor is in nice shape. I was told by the guy I bought it from that is a 1949 model. However there's a casting date on the side of the transmission that says 1948. I would like to positively get an accurate date on this tractor. I do also have the front grill and hood for this. Let me know what you guys think?

I thought the R8 used a Briggs. I'll have to dig out my records and see. The only way to date it would be engine serial number but if the engine isn't right there is no way other than a time frame.

Casting dates can be long before a tractor is built!

I like the Shaw’s, sold my 1947 R7 to a gent last yr. had a Briggs ZZ on it.

You have the grill and hood you say? Did you get any attachments?

Thanks for all the response to my posting. I am posting a few pictures of the data plates off the tractor and the engine in hopes that I might be able to identify somewhat closely the year of this tractor with some help. The model number of the tractor is actually R8WLH. The Wisconsin engine is a model# AENS, serial#1494030. Also would like to know what the horsepower of this engine is. I'm not familiar with Wisconsin's. Thanks. 20190505_133839.jpg

Well that makes a little more sense. The W shows it had a Wisconsin originally. The LH is for long housing. The R series had a tendency to be light in the front and so the frame was lengthened to help that. The AEN was rated at about 9 HP. (9.2?) Your engine was built in the second half of 1950. The tractor most likely would have been a late 50 or 51. The attached file is a letter from Shaw explaining the lengths. R8shawexthsgreference.jpg

Thanks for the info Dougt. It helps me greatly. I'm glad it sounds like this tractor might possibly have all the original equipment including the engine.
