Simplicity 728 revival

I decided to make a thread of this project, last year I bought a simplicity 728 at an auction for $35, this spring I got it to run, for maybe 20sec, then while cranking it suddenly locked up. After pulling the cylinder head I discovered that the cylinder is deeply scored, decided to look for another engine or a short block, ended up buying a 717, good deck and an engine that I could build on.1015191551.jpg
I don't have a pic of the parts tractor.

The pulley on this engine isn't going to be used, I was surprised when it slid off without a puller.

The holes on the front are tapped 1/4-20, I need 5/16-18 for this application so out came the drill with a 17/64 bit followed by a tap.

Tried pulling the pulleys off of the old engine, one self destructed, the other was damaged, and so is my puller. The one that came off the old engine is the same as the pto pulley, set out and got a slightly different but correct size, may have to have the pto pulley slightly machined to work, but it will drive for
now.

Finished product, pto pulley is a bit too low.0910201740.jpg

I had mocked up the shroud and starter generator pulley prior attempting to swap the drive pulleys.

This carburetor leaks gas into the block, still installing a shutoff, but ups is bringing me a new carb.

Not sure I've seen a carb bolt like this, I have seen Philips, I replace them with an Allen bolt.

The engine is now bolted into the frame

Drilled and test fit the bracket.

Drained the old oil (contaminated with gas).

Filled with fresh 30weight.

Installed the new coil, ended up using the old coil instead.

Hooked up the starter generator and checked for spark, good to go.

Plan for the pulley is to flip it, space it with 1" washers notched for the key, fill the end flush with 3/8" washers, and a longer bolt, some blue loctite and send her home.

Ok, got back to this tractor today, installed rebuilt carburetor, turns out the throttle linkage was too short and holding the carburetor at half throttle, or so I thought, turns out the aftermarket carburetor I had was about an inch shorter than the original, not much to say on that.
