I am sometimes amazed at peoples "fixes" and what they are thinking.
I pulled apart this Simplicity 6512.5 to find out what was wrong with the steering.
On these I have read the steering gears get stripped so that's what I was expecting.
That isn't at all what the issue was.
Once apart I found the key was completely missing from the drag link (fan) gear and shaft...but someones fix was to weld the gear collar to the shaft. Well that didn't work the weld had broken and the shaft was turning without the gear.
So with some careful grinding I got the gear/collar off the shaft.
Then I noticed the both the upper and lower bushing collars for the drag link (fan) gear shaft were completely missing.
Next I found that something must have happened to the top plate that holds the steering shafts because someone had welded one one and not true or straight. It also wouldn't except a bushing sleeve because the inside was cobbled.
So a cutting ball on a drill and the plate in a vise took care of that.
Once everything was done I replaced the missing key in the drag link gear/shaft.
Put in the two missing bushings greased everything up and put it all back together.
It steers like new now.
Someone had,had it all apart before and sure screwed things up.
