Here we have a old Horse that a scrapper found in the weeds. Someone stuffed a Onan on it from a 70s Sears Suburban and pitched the hood since it wouldn't clear the old style air cleaner. They also rewired it....well kinda.
Then someone picked the tractor up by the dash with a chain.
The tag is long gone.
By the 1 1/8th inch axles it appears to be a 400 series. By the earlier style decals it appears to be a mid 80s. By the engine plate on the frame I'm guessing it's a 417.
It's also a factory electric lift tractor. The chassis and running gear are in good shape so I may straighten it up eventually, get it going and find a hood for it.

Does that Onan still turn over? I see the top of the air filter is missing.

I don't know Kenny. I haven't even tried yet. The wiring is so screwed up that it has nothing at the switch. Not a huge Onan fan either way so if it is a runner it would be easier to leave it on but if not I would rather have a Kohler single or twin on it anyway.

Doesn't the 540 have an Onan in it? The hood on them should fit.
It won't fit. The dash and hood where it meets the dash is completely different on the 520.
But the 416 had a Onan too. They just used a lower air cleaner....but to use that air cleaner you need the newer style carb, and to use the newer style carb you either need a newer style intake or a factory style adapter.

All right. Let's go with a small block Chevy, then.;)

But seriously, I think you could rig up a relocated air cleaner like the under the fender ones in modern pick ups.

First I need to tinker with the engine and see if it is still good. If it is good I will figure a air cleaner setup out but I don't have a spare hood right now to clear anyway lol.
Although I have a buddy that does...
