So I would like information on painting wheels and getting the tires on without marking the paint. Ideas please. Paint wheels first then put tires on or put tires on then paint. I’m priming and then painting.

And noticed this on the wheels today. One side seem sloped to allow for tire installation. Maybe. ???

When I mount tires on a fresh painted rim.
1. Paint needs to be dry and hard, usually takes 24 hours for quick dry rattle can.
2. Tires need to be warm, leave in sun for 4 hours.
3. wrap a rag around tire irons where they may contact the rim.
4. Mount so the Tire irons will be used from the back side of the tire.
5. Lots of soapy water.

If the wheel has a noticeable wider dish on one side that's the side I always use to dismount or mount from. Some rims almost impossible if you don't or should I say makes it easier...
As for mounting without scratching the rim.????? Good luck..
But yea like others mentioned work from the back if possible. Scratches are on the back then...

I usually plan on priming/painting the inside & after it's dry install & mask the tires then prime & paint the outside & recoat the inside where the bead seats & of course air them up when they're dry. It's a longer process but saves marking them up.

I prime and paint and wait 2-3 days before mounting the tires. If no soapy water close by I use tire shine to lubricate the tire bead. I also put down a piece of cardboard on the work bench to lay the rim on when mounting the tires. I have had some tires that will push on without the use of tire irons.

Ok, so I went ahead and painted the wheels. Primed then white paint. Just old primer and paint I had around. A few drops of japan hardener and fish eye stuff. Mix er up, and on ya go. I decided I’ll touch up the wheels after I get the tires over the new paint. Have small painters brushes, so won’t be to bad, and who’s gunna see it, I suppose. Not a show tractor and never will be. The Case 446 will look just fine once they are on. Just have to do the rest too. Hehe. Any way, will see how it goes. I kinda wanted to do it to day, because it was 9C out today and not raining. So got all the tractors out so no over spray on them.

Good job taking advantage of good weather, Noel! I was working with the overhead door open yesterday, but no way today! The wheels look great and really a workhorse tractor only needs a good coat of paint and like you say, flaws can be touched up. Those touch up guns are really useful!
