Picked up this freebie 3 weeks ago. It was missing a carb, starter wouldn't turn over(broken magnet), steering froze up, and water in the fuel tank. I bought a new carb and starter and got it running on a remote tank. While checking out the fuel tank I noticed the fuel pickup was laying in the bottom of the tank. So I pulled the fender deck for tank access. The pickup tube has a threaded end but no way to get inside the tank to install it. Must be installed at the factory before they put the 2 halves of the tank together. The tank has a molded in elbow on top and by looking at other tanks on the web it looks like some are drilled out and a grommet and elbow installed to fix the problem. I ordered a grommet and elbow and will see if I can get this fixed.

I had to install a grommet and pickup fitting in my MTD 990. I had to warm my grommet up in warm water to make it pliable. It all worked out great. What engine do you have in this. It’s funny how these little bugger tractors can be contagious and a challenge to get going.

You're right Jim they can be a challenge cause so many people butcher them up when they do their own repairs.
Well maintained ones go for a fair price. The butchered ones I stay away from. Just ain't worth it for me..

While this is apart, I think I will clean up the fender deck and maybe put a new drive belt on. Most of the powdercoat is already off and the electrolysis tank should help out with the rust. I can finish up with the sandblaster if needed. I took the hose to all of the grass and crud left under the fender deck.

I’ve never seen the underside of a newer tractor. They sure have a lot of sheet metal compared to the plate steel of the oldies. Does your steering shaft going through the frame need repaired or does it just look worse than it is.

Yep, these tractors are built pretty light. The steering was froze up when I got it. I sprayed it down good with some penetrating oil and it loosening up. I may have to pull it apart to clean the rest of the rust out of it.

Spent some time sanding and buffing the hood. It had a lot of scratches all over it but most of them have sanded out so far. The worst scratches were on the right side just above the body line. I used 220 grit to start and then went to 400. Then I hit it with the buffer. I think it looks pretty good considering where it started. I still have more to do on the lower sides and front below the grille.

That’s the way you do it. I’ve done three that way it’s a lot of work but rewarding. I need to put a hydro fan on my White 1855 but the fender pan needs stripped down because of some bad rusted areas. I want to wait and do both when the weather warms up. Looking good !

The E-tank does most of the work. I just wire wheel the blackish powder off after. Normally I would give it a sandblasting at this point, but I think it will be fine after the Ospho treatment. After all this isn't a collector tractor.
