After this many yrs I finally found a cure for this, just run 3 equal spaced beads of contruction glue down the sides and let let it dry to hardness. works great for me. When you set it down to dry drop the handle so it doesn't touch the glue!!

I seen some young guys walking through HD deliberately pushing down hard on the buckets they have for sale...
.Thankfully I wasn't in need of any of the buckets..
Sort of reminds me when shopping carts get stuck together at the grocery store
 
It is really simple. Put a remotely activated automotive air bag in the bucket before placing another bucket inside. When you want to separate them, set off the bag. Guaranteed separation.
