Thanks Doug! I’m glad that you are back and feeling a little better. Thanks for getting this build thread going, Nick! I was sick so didn't get to start reading until today.
You are building a show piece here! Looking forward to following the rest of the build.

Bet it felt good to get some seat time on it, Nick!I got the tractor running over the weekend. Cleaned the carburetor, fresh gas, and a new battery and it fired right up. I had the driveshaft out, so I had to put that back in too. I took it outside and washed it, then took it for a ride for the first time since 2017. I ran it for about a half hour to start breaking in the motor, then let it cool overnight, and retorqued the head bolts yesterday. Next time I run it, I have to get it warm and change the oil. Now onto getting the rest of the parts painted and finish putting it together.

It sure did. I never drove this tractor much, I started taking it apart about 2 weeks after I bought it. It feels like a new tractor now, much nicer than the last time I drove it. Probably as close to a new 1973 tractor as I will ever get to drive.Bet it felt good to get some seat time on it, Nick!

Thats the biggest key to a resto, take lots a pictures and bag and tag everything. Trust me I know how ya feel Nick, I too did the same thing as you.I didn't take a whole lot of pictures while I was taking it apart, and getting stuff ready for paint. I now wish I did.
Nice to know when I hopefully rerestore my yellow 10 horse Craftsman somedayI used some paint stripper first to get to get the heavy stuff off
I can imagine NOS stuff being a fortune, it seems like just about anything for the “name brand” types of machines are. What you did here looks really good and it was much cheaper, case in point on ebay right now….The aftermarket decal sets come with a decal for the dash, instead of a tin. I wanted the original textured tin, but it didn’t look great. Sometimes you can find NOS ones, but they are not cheap. I’ve seen some other guys restore the original ones, so that’s what I did. I scuffed it with scotch brite, then masked off the unpainted sections and sprayed it with satin black. After that dried, I masked that off and sprayed clear on the unpainted sections. Then I cut the labels out of the new decal and put them on it. I think it turned out pretty good.

Looks like you gotta little shop buddy to keep ya company and help ya out there. Your old steering wheel looks exactly like the one on my hydro, I will go out to the shed tomorrow and get a picture.I also got the correct steering wheel for it. Not sure what the one that was on it before was off, but it was not correct.

Its obviously your machine but if it was mine, I think some nice fat ags would look great on the back even though they would cost more. Even though im an original type guy, I like the “stock” turf idea too.Brand new front tires. For the back, I have another set with original turf tires that are in good shape. I still have to paint the rims on them. View attachment 91784View attachment 91785
The new seat looks great, wow what a difference! I ain’t askin ya what ya paid cause it ain’t my business but I bet it wasn’t cheap, I still have to get mine done too and according to my stepdad a guy he knows who could do it said he could do it for $200.00 a seat!!I also had the seat reupholstered, the one on the left. The one on the right is the original seat of one of my other Cubs that I had the guy copy.

She looks mighty fine out in the sun!
Hey, me too with mineI started taking it apart about 2 weeks after I bought it.
I took a lot of pictures and labeled everything when it was coming apart. What I meant was I did not take a lot of progress pictures.Thats the biggest key to a resto, take lots a pictures and bag and tag everything. Trust me I know how ya feel Nick, I too did the same thing as you.
I usually see them around $150-$200. That is just insane. Almost 2x what I paid for the tractor.I can imagine NOS stuff being a fortune, it seems like just about anything for the “name brand” types of machines are. What you did here looks really good and it was much cheaper, case in point on ebay right now….

Good to know what you did there too with yours by the way, because I might wanna do some detailing of my own of my decals on the hood of mine next because they look terrible.
That’s Riley, she always has to be near me, no matter what I’m doing. That steering wheel looks very similar to the one on my MF7 too.Looks like you gotta little shop buddy to keep ya company and help ya out there. Your old steering wheel looks exactly like the one on my hydro, I will go out to the shed tomorrow and get a picture.
That would look good, along with some tri ribs on the front. For what they cost though, if I was going to buy a set, I would rather put them on one of my other tractors that I actually use.Its obviously your machine but if it was mine, I think some nice fat ags would look great on the back even though they would cost more. Even though im an original type guy, I like the “stock” turf idea too.
I think it was around $120, but that was in 2019 when stuff was still “cheap”, and it was a friend of my Dad’s so he gave me a better deal. You probably won’t get one done for less than $200 now.The new seat looks great, wow what a difference! I ain’t askin ya what ya paid cause it ain’t my business but I bet it wasn’t cheap, I still have to get mine done too and according to my stepdad a guy he knows who could do it said he could do it for $200.00 a seat!!
The guy who I had rebuild it put the oil in, I’m not sure what he used. Im planning on using SAE 30 when I change it.She looks mighty fine out in the sun!Did you use any “break in oil” for the engine or anything?
Not a problem, I replied to most of them. Maybe I should have spaced my posts out more instead of posting it all at once.Sorry for all my replies by the way Nick, I just saw this post even though you told all of us that you were gonna post it ahead of time. I just wanted to reply to all the stuff I found interesting. The tractor before you restored it, and your 147 in the garage together look like the same color but outside they look different.
CCSpecialties or IHCCW? There’s others, but they are probably the two biggest ones. My other 149 may have one of those reproduction dash tins on it. It has some slight differences from my other ones that I know are original. That tractor was repainted at one time too, probably 20 or more years ago.I used to buy reproduction metal dashes from a site that just sold cub cadet parts. They had everything. I can’t remember the name, I think dad still has a magnet on the fridge from them.
They were like 45-50 bucks but this was 20 years ago. Things were a lot cheaper and whole cubs could be had for 100-150 bucks….
I have boxes of parts. I wonder if this stuff sells for what people actually list them for. I bet I have 15,000 dollars worth of NOS parts.
I’ll have to ask my dad. That was a long time ago.CCSpecialties or IHCCW? There’s others, but they are probably the two biggest ones. My other 149 may have one of those reproduction dash tins on it. It has some slight differences from my other ones that I know are original. That tractor was repainted at one time too, probably 20 or more years ago.
