Workin' on the Old Tractors

Finished fitting the patch panel and figured I should clean and paint the frame work that this covers while I have access. I was able to hammer off the flaky rust and then a light grind and wire wheel followed with Ospho to treat any remaining rust. Sprayed some anti-rust primer and paint on it. Should be ready to start welding tomorrow but I see some rain in the forecast that might keep me from it.

Had 28 holes to drill and got 26 done before the 2nd cordless battery died. I have 2 batteries but both were partially discharged when I started drilling. Waiting for a battery to recharge right now. Using a 7/16" bit and drilling from the bottom using the square hole as a guide. I'll switch to a step drill from the top to finish with. Then I just need some paint before assembly. While paint is drying I can start installing the wobble box.

Wow it got hot out. Our thermometer says it hit 87°F and is now 85°F. Got some rattle can primer and paint sprayed on and its drying fast. Should be good enough for now.

It rained this morning so I didn't get started until afternoon. Wire brushed the bolts and ran a tap through the nuts to clean them up enough to install all of the guards. Still need to finish tightening the bolts but its looking good so far.

All I got done on the Haybine was tightening the guard bolts. Spent some time pulling the cutter bar out of my model 100 sickle mower. Maily wanted to get a good look at the pin and bushing that drive it. The pin has a little wear and I imagine the bushing does also. According to there website the local Case IH dealer has the new pin and bushing in stock. I found enough knife sections on the shelf to replace them. Just need to buy the end knife that is a triple. Mine has the end broke off. Last pic shows what it should look like. I'll try to get away without replacing the ledger plate on the guards for now. I think the old one still have a little life in them and at $10 a piece I don't want to throw $230 bucks at this right now. Used to be you could buy the knives and ledger plates for around $1.00 a piece.

Installed the wobble box. Just need to install the sickle bar and replace some tines on the hay reel and it should be ready for a test.

How many acres do you mow ?
Down to about 15-18 acres now. We used to do several neighbors fields(15-20 ac.) but most hasn't been kept up and has mostly weeds, small brush, and small trees starting to grow in them. Then some changed owners and they don't want any spraying or fertilizing done. My cousin across the road now wants to do his 5 acre field for himself. He wants bedding for the pigs he is raising and then wants to try to sell the rest. He just bought a John Deere 24T baler and a John Deere 3-point rake. Now he is looking for a sickle mower. We will see if he get everything going this year.

Pulled the duals off the IH 284 and the floater front tires. Going to put the DR 3-point trimmer on it and run it along some fence lines.

Those IH 284 were nice little tractors. Kinda reminds me a baby version of their tractors of that era. I see they were made with a gas motor and two different diesel engines. If I'm reading it right a "Mazda 1.2L 4 cylinder " and " Nissan 1.6L 3 cylinder" and the earlier ones being gas maybe their own ? What do you have in yours ?

It has the Nissan diesel. The 284 was built by Komatsu.

Used the 284 and DR trimmer along the cattle lane. Lots of buttercup growing in the fence lines. Think I need to do some spraying after I get the hay done this year. Forgot the camera. I'll try to remember tomorrow.

Finished replacing the broken tines on the reel and install the bar assy. Just need to install the lift cylinder and do a final grease and chain oiling job and the haybine should be ready for a test. Hope it lasts for more than a few minutes. I am always afraid that I forgot something when I do a job like this.
