Workin' on the Old Tractors

Started sanding the primer on the MM ZAU fuel tank. Some of the rust pits didn't quite fill so I shot 3 more coats of primer on this afternoon. I'll try to get it sanded down tomorrow and maybe even get it painted.

Sprayed the tank for the MM ZAU. Last 3 pics are the tractor its going on and the old tank that had rust separate the bung from the tank which is the reason for replacing it.

Set the tank and hood on the MM ZTU (the rusty one) and got the tank on the MM ZAU. I need my brothers help to get the hood set on to avoid scratching my new paint. Just need to check the fluids and make sure everything is working good enough for the tractor show. I may try working on my 1956 Minneapolis Moline UTS Special to see if I can get it to the show also. Its the last pic and yes it is pink. I need to talk with that cranky painter guy about that. He was supposed to get this painted 10-15 years ago. I have a new manifold to replace the one thats on it because its rusting out. Needs carb done, a rear tire mounted up which I have, a new battery, and some other small items.

Pulled the carb on the MM UTS Special and have the manifold bolts soaking with penetrant. Hopefully it all comes loose without breaking anything.

I was able to break the manifold bolts loose and got it removed. Now to paint the new one and get it installed. I have gaskets somewhere that I need to find.

Got the MM ZAU fired up but found the charging system wasn't working. Tried jumping the alternator to get full field and still nothing but the connections are pretty rusty. I had a rebuilt alternator all painted up in Moline colors that we threw on. Still nothing. Checked the voltage regulator and found one really rusty terminal. Cleaned it up and it is now charging as it should. Drove it around to the front of the shop and gave it a quick pressure wash to get the first layer of crud off. It did die when we parked it in front of the shop so we need to check into why. It looked like the spark was on the weak side.

Also put a new push/pull switch in the MM ZTU and have it running pretty good and all of the parts hung back on so it should be close to ready for the show.

Looks nice Cjet..
You are one determined fellow..

Finally found why the ZAU quit. The coil went bad but when I test it it was within the specs that I could find online. That doesn't mean the specs were correct. To know for sure I pulled a known good coil off of our Farmall Super C and it fired right up with tons of spark. Had my brother stop by to help throw the hood on. Now its ready for a thorough hand wash and do a little more buffing. I need to move another tractor to get the ZTU
out so I can pressure wash it. No buffing necessary on that one.

Gave the ZAU a good hand wash last night and today I buffed up the hood, fenders, wheels, and a few of the flatter area's on the castings. Its looking pretty good for being stored outside. I painted this tractor 20+ years ago.
