Workin' on the Old Tractors

Sanded down the plastic metal on the fuel tank. I always forget just how tough that stuff is. I used four 8"-36 grit discs to get it roughed out and about 8-10 6" DA discs in 80 grit. That stuff knocks the edge right off the sandpaper. Then I decided to strip it to bare metal and treated the rust with Ospho. Once that dries I'll shoot some epoxy primer on it for now.

Just finished shooting some epoxy primer on the tank. Also moved the tractor to the front of the shop and got years of green crud pressure washed off.

Swapped out the tire and wheel. Looks better with the matching 14.9 x 38's. The temporary tire and wheel were 13.6 x 38 so the tractor had a slight lean. The steering was extremely hard to turn and kind of varied between hard and a little easier. Jacked the front end up and it was still acting the same. Looked in the steering box with the bore scope and it looked good and had oil. Started thinking this was acting like U-Joints. Shot a bunch of penetrating oil on them and warmed them up with a propane torch and worked the wheel back and forth. Pretty soon I started seeing rust dripping out of the joints and it kept getting easier to turn. Today its steering a lot better. I'm running out of time to take this to the show so it probably won't go. The upside its making progress. I think I will try loading a tractor on the trailer so its ready to go. Not sure if I will take the 2 tractors to the show this evening or tomorrow.

Got 4 tractors over to the show today so we are ready for the first day tomorrow. The guy I painted the John Deere 730 parts for back in post #320 on page 16 of this thread has his tractor there. I will get some pics now that its all back together.
