Working on the Ford Ranger

Put a new battery in the Ranger about 4 months ago after the old one lost a cell and wouldn't charge up any more. I haven't been driving it much because it needs a new clutch put in it but I move it around every month or 2 and its starts really good. Went to move it a week and a half ago and the battery was deader than a door nail. Pulled the battery out and put it on the battery minder charger for a couple days until it switched into the float mode. Did a load test on it and it checked out good. Put it back in the truck and it was dead in under 2 days. Charged it again, load tested again, and it checked out good again. This time when hooking it back up I payed more attention and notice it sparked more than usual. My brother has a amperage tester to clip around the wires to check for a draw. It was showing 3 to 4 amps and I think normal should be around 50 milliamps. The alternator is charging within spec and the diodes check ed out good. About the only thing left that I can think of is the voltage regulator is bad and never breaks the circuit when shut off. Decided to pull the alternator and look inside. The brushes are wore out and ate into the slip rings so rather than trying to just replace the VR I will now just buy a new alternator. Now to decide on where to get a new one.

Take to Napa since you got the core out..Napa usually carries quality parts. Online will be cheaper but costs arm and leg to ship core. Online im sure you find dozens of different makes of dubious distinction….and theres always the scrapyard where they will generally bench test unit at your request…cheapest option

Looked at Rock Auto and a few other places online. Like you say to send in a core would be a pain. Then most only had a one year warranty. Checked Oreilly's and NAPA. Oreilly's didn't have one in stock but listed price was about $15 cheaper than NAPA but it would be next week before I got it. Then I noticed NAPA had a 20% discount code if you ordered online and a higher core charge. With the 20% off and core charge rebate it ended up about $33 cheaper thru NAPA and they got it from their local warehouse within an hour. Picked it up this afternoon and now I am waiting for a break in the rain to install it. Most of these reman. alternators come with a new plug pigtail to replace the factory one. Never had a problem with mine but they claim some factory plugs caught fire or melted.

I had a 91 base model 4x4. Bought it in 2002. It was a good truck. I drove it for a few months and put it up for sale. Sold it to a guy that lived a few houses up from my dad. He drove that truck for 12 more years. The body mounts rotted off, the bed floor rotted out. The truck looked like it was bent in a V. He claimed it ran like a champ still. He passed away in 2014. It sat in the yard of his house till 2019 when it was finally scrapped!

Body is in good shape. Never used to get salt on the roads in winter around here. Now they put some on but I am not driving in it every day. The red paint is really faded. Guess I need to talk with my painter. It needs a new windshield and the sagging headliner fabric glued back down to the molded backing. Already bought the new clutch and hope to get it in this winter once I clear a spot for it in the shop.
 
1st pic was just after I bought it. The second may have been about 10 yrs ago but its about the same today if I wash it up good.

Did they made that cab and 1/2 with rear doors that opened back then ?
