I was givin a couple push mowers and the one has a Tecumseh 3.8 that has real good spark. I pulled till i couldnt anymore. I tried starting fluid and nothing. I thinking it needs a new carb but wanted a 2nd opinion on my thinkin.

If it doesn't pop with starting fluid I would change the spark plug first. Even a good spark can not work under compression.

I changed the plug and the same thing. I do know the primer dont work on it. I even poured a little fuel in the carb and got nothing

Has it got compression? That'sd the big issue I have had with a bunch of 2-cycle stuff, not enough compression to fire off!

It's hard to check things while pulling your butt off.
Can you get someone to roll it over while you check compression and air isnt back and forth-ing on the carb because.of a stuck inlet or exhaust valve?

honestly I wouldn't put much time or effort into a free tecumseh engine powered push mower. if it's something simple that's great. otherwise pull off anything usefyl and off to the crusher

I use a battery drill and a socket to fit the flywheel bolt to spin 3.5 - 5 hp engines that refuse to start with a pull. Hold the drill loosely.

Go to about the 1:00 mark here to see a demo.

Larry, that works fine but if it kicks hard enough to start before you get the socket off you'll be looking for a new left hand screw that holds the chuck on the shaft. Ask me how I know!! Best to take the screw out.

I would just buy a new Black Decker drill. I have been using this one for ~ 5 years or more and it hasn't let me down. Heck it uses the old stile ni-cad batteries.
