1440 gets a bagger

A few weeks ago I found a bagger setup with a free sign on it. I think it is off a newer Cub Cadet LT since the guy had one for sale around the same time. I picked it up, hoping it would be similar enough to make it work on my 1440. We’re at the peak of leaf season, so I figured I better get started on mounting it.

Looking at the parts lookup, it is very similar to the correct one for my tractor, besides the bracket that attaches it to the back of the tractor, and the shape of the tube that connects to the deck. The newer ones have brackets that bolt onto the sides of the frame, whereas the one for my tractor bolts into the 2 threaded holes in the rear hitch plate. I didn’t want to modify anything until I was sure it was going to work, so it could still be used on the right tractor if I couldn’t use it. My dad gave me a piece of 1/2” square tubing he had left over from a project to use on this. I cut 3 pieces off 9” long, drilled a few holes, stacked them, and bolted them between the bracket and the tractor. I was able to heat the end of the tube and bend it enough to get it to fit. There is a small gap on the back, I put a few pieces of gorilla tape over it to try it, but I will have to come up with a permanent solution. I’m thinking I could bend a thin piece of metal to fit the discharge opening, then rivet it to the plastic. I have to make a bracket to mount the tube too, I kind of ran out of time and wanted to use it over the weekend so that’s only zip tied on for now.

More to come later…

Nothing like free. I’m going to try and get something setup by next spring. I’m getting tired of using the push mower to bag grass and leaves. I see these for free every now and then or sold cheap but I’m always too late they are gone. Let us know how it works.

I tried it out this weekend, it works good. I’m sure a fan assisted bagger would be much better, but this beats raking, and it was free. We had a lot of leaves, I was out there most of the day Saturday, and a few hours on Sunday too. It fills up quick, I probably dumped it at least 30 times between the 2 days. I had some issues with the tube plugging up where the leaves were really heavy, but for the most part it worked really good. This was the most fun I ever had cleaning up leaves.

I dumped the first couple bags into my chipper, that will go into the garden.

The rest got dumped in the woods. This pile had grown to about twice that by the time I was done, and some was dumped in other areas too.

About a year ago, I saw some free parts for a bagger, but I think a lot was missing so I didn’t take it. I kept thinking about it, wishing I took them, but they were gone the next day when I went by again. I got lucky this happened to be a Cub Cadet one too. It wasn’t something I needed bad enough to spend a lot of money on, but something I have wanted for a while. I normally just blow the leaves into piles and pick them up.

I saw on the Weather Channel today that it is "green" to leave the leaves lay! I have been going green all my life, I guess---LOL!

Good job reusing that bagger Cub! Looks like it is working great!

By bagger standards go that hopper is one of the bigger ones I believe.
Fun to work with isn't it ?
Why not do it and have fun doing it...
A lot more fun than raking.
Glad you got it functional and especially having fun doing it. It looks like it did a nice job and most of all it never disintegrated. Lol
Yea, that’s always a good thing.
