Got a old front tine till that had a bad engine. Fellow at work gave me one for the old one.
the engine i got mounted on the tiller starts easy enough and will set at an idle for some time. Give it some throddle and engage the tines start off across the garden and all a sudden it back fires thru the carb air intake and shears the crank key.

I know th efellow at work would take a couple 3 or 4 to make one running engine. So has me to wondering if possaible a different fly wheel could change the timing on it?

I see a predator virtical small engine in my future.

It might have been partly sheared in the first place. Just having a dent in the key will throw the timing off.

I know you said Briggs, but timing could be off.
Some Tecumseh engines had an offset key
AlsoSears was.rumored.to have sold several models.of engine with the cam timing mis-marked to make people take them back to Sears for service.

As for spark timing, does it have points?
