It only took about 5 or 6 hours to turn the big nonrunning Jake into a runner.
And what a blast this tractor is to run.
With power steering, foot control hydro, cruise control and that big cast iron Kohler K532 twin this thing is as much fun to run as a golf cart.
It also has two spools of hydraulics with front remotes which opens up possibilities.
There was also two optional rear PTOs for these tractors.
A 540 rpm and a 2000 rpm. This one has neither but thats fine because I would most likely never use one anyway, well, unless I found one of the 4 foot tillers for these lol.
But I doubt that I go looking for one.
Have other tractors with tillers.
besides we have been downsizing the garden the last few years.
I believe this is a low hour tractor by the hour meter and by the typical wear points.
Someone has added a oil pressure gauge.
The engine carries around 60 psi.
I was really surprised by the tractors good overall condition and that fact that it hasn't been hacked on thru the years.
I do need to straighten the grill sheetmetal and do something for a grill and front lights above the grill.
My only complaint is the big Kohler backfires every time I shut it off whether at idle or throttled up.
Anybody who has dealt with this have any input.
I know I have dealt with it but it has been a long time ago and I don't remember how I dealt with it.

Is it the same differential as a LGT 165 Ford Kenny. I think it is but I’m not sure.

I am guessing the carb is set to lean is why the backfire happens at shut down. Or engine running hot.

The same but has brake shoes at each tire like the JD's use. Only single brake pedal, but you shouldn't need the dual pedals. Should pull real well, Alice had that rear end and she'll dig holes with both tires if she doesn't move.
I'd load those tires. Be nice if the 29 x 12's were easy to find.

Sounds like it might be running rich and the hot exhaust is setting off the fumes maybe?

The Peerless 2500 series super duty transaxle is pretty common.
Used in a lot of hydro Jacobsen,Deere,Gilson,MTD 990 and others.
I love this transaxle.
It is very very heavy duty and with neutral between high and low tractors equipped with this rear are the easiest hydros to roll around even though they are usually among the bigger GTs.
I do really like the limited slip in them also. This rearend is one of my favorite things about the MTD 990 (along with the big cast iron Briggs).
The only setup that I think gets more tractor is Simplicity/Allis's adjustable limited slip setup that they used until the late 60s. Simplicity/Allis transaxles continued to have limited slip up thru 2000. It just wasn't adjustable after the late 60s. As for Brakes I have debated for years about taking the complete turning brake setup off of a Deere with the Peerless 2500 series rearend and putting it on a 990.
With the Jake I believe I would only need the linkage and pedals.
I do believe that when designing the tractor Jacobsen initially was going to make turning brakes at least optional.
The left floor board is cut to allow brake pedals and I noticed on a decal about releasing the cruise control it says to depress "both brake pedals".

For the shutdown backfire somebody thinks lean and somebody said rich.
Its like canceling out votes lol.
Carb adjustment crossed my mind too but it doesn't seem that likely to me.
Of the hundreds of tractors that I have went thru I have pulled the carbs and rebuilt so many I couldn't count them.
When I put them back on I have them preset but always fine tune them on the tractor.
These tractors don't backfire on shut down with the carbs in or out of adjustment.
I'm more leaning to a points adjustment although that usually isn't an issue either.
Having went thru, repaired, refurbished, etc a ton of tractors over the years this is very uncommon with my tractors.
My model 19 in my Simolicity 700 did it 20 some years and I have a Sunstar with a twin Cylinder Kohler that would do it if the "anti backfire" wire was hooked up on the carb.
A lot of the newer engines with do it if the anti backfire solenoid wire isn't hooked up on the carb. All the solenoid does is shut the gas off when the key is turned off.
The older engines didn't have this solenoid on the carb.
I know people occasionally have this issue and have tried several fixes.
I'm wondering about valve adjustment.
It does seem to be more common on the Kohlers.
Ok there's some mornin' ramblings..

The Big Jake needs a good bath and cleaning was but its been too chilly.
I did give it a quick scrub down and it looks a lot better.
Note the decal that says to depress both brake pedals to release the cruise control.
On another interesting note,I replaced the fuel line and what was probably the original metal fuel filter that was leaking just slightly at its middle seem.
Now the tractor does not back fire when I shut it off.
Must have sealed up the straw effect that was letting it suck a little more fuel at shutoff ?

Thanks Kenny.
Now I need to find a big grader to put on the 3 point.
Years ago I had a Britney cat.0 3 point on a Ariens GT. It was very heavy duty too heavy for one guy to pick up. It would swivel 360 degrees while on the tractor. I would love to find another.
