Cub Cadet 149 Restoration

I got some parts ready and in primer. I ended up stripping the hood down to bare metal and starting over. The four corners have dimples from where the supports inside are spot welded on. They are all like that, but it annoys me so I filled them.

I also redid the front edge on the dashboard. It was worn down from the hood rubbing, like they all are after 50 years. I fixed that before, but I didn’t have the line exactly right and it didn’t look right against the hood. I never checked it against the hood before it was painted. This time I left it on the tractor while I was working on it, so I could make sure it was right.

It’s been a while since I updated this. I have been working on it, just haven’t had much worth posting about recently. I ended up re-redoing the dash because the primer lifted in a few spots. I think there was an issue with the primer I used the first time, back in 2018. It probably would have been ok if I just sanded those spots out and reprimed it, but I decided to sand all of the old primer off, back down to the factory paint. I shouldn’t have any more issues with it now.

I got the headlight panel and hood hinge sandblasted and primed too.

I took the tires off the rear wheels so they could be sandblasted.

I got one of the wheels sandblasted, and primed it yesterday. I should have the other one done this week. IMG_0965.jpegIMG_0964.jpegIMG_0972.jpegIMG_0976.jpeg

I got the gas tank in primer yesterday too. I have 3 of these tanks, this one had a few small dents on the outside, but it was really clean inside. The other two were nicer on the outside, but had rust inside.

There was nothing wrong with the old gas cap, but I have a bunch of NOS ones so I put one of them on it.

Nice Nick.
You have access to a sandblaster at work I assume ?
Anything different with the paint on the gas tank. The reason I say is some paints don't like to get like gas spilled on them to much...and it will happen sooner or later.

Also you guys own the body shop or just work there ?

My dad owns the shop. Yes, we have a sandblaster at work. It’s just a Harbor Freight blast cabinet, nothing special. I’m using acrylic enamel on everything. That should be somewhat fuel resistant once it’s cured. I’ll just have to be careful filling it, and wipe up any spills immediately. I will probably put one of the other tanks on there and leave this one cure for month or two before I put it on and put gas in it just to be safe.

Nice work, Nick. That's going to be a show worthy tractor! If those rusty inside gas tanks are like some steel ones I have it is just about impossible to clean them due to a baffle the manufacturer put in for some stupid reason. Had to scrap a tank from my JD110 as that baffle made it impossible to clean on the other side of it, and can't see past it to know the conditon.

That bottom area in this pic is the baffle. There is still a big part of the tank on the other side of it with the fuel line fitting on it. Looks like that little tab is the fuel flow between the halves. It had a couple of rust pinholes too.

Thanks Doug! Yes, they do have the baffle like that. The one tank is not bad, just some light surface rust, probably not enough to even worry about yet. The other one, from what I remember, was worse than your tank. That was actually the one I originally bought for this tractor, then I got the other two with some parts tractors I bought. I was soaking it with Evaporust, then I was going to put some gravel in it, shake it up good, rinse it out and coat the inside of it with tank sealer. Of course, like you said, you don’t know what’s on the other side of the baffle, and there’s not much you can do about it.
