Should done this months and months ago. Rings gone I’m guessing. Have receipts of when engine was done before by last owner. Over twenty years ago. He owned the tractor since 1977 until I bought it from him, around 2013. I’m the third owner. Tractor is a 1970. Any way, Its been having power loss and missing, trouble under heavy load while snow throwing. I’m sure it would cut grass ok. And other wise worked good. Used a little oil. Nuthin to jump up and down about. So I tryed a million things to try and fix this problem and no fix. So this is my last resort. Any way. Some pictures.

Cut grass till about two o’clock today. Then got the engine out of the JD today. But not sure about how to get on the bench yet, where the Case wheel weights are. Have to do some figuring.

Well got the weights moved off the bench where I want to put motor. And waxed the weights up on both sides while I was at it.

Now, how does a 200 lb, fat, weakling lift a 125 lb motor up 3 feet on to a bench ? Hehe

So all apart now, well as far as I’m goin. Just need rings. Rings worn out. Something wrong with number 2 compression ring. Seems springy, won’t sit into groove right. No ridge on cylinder.

I always like to pull the rings off the pistons and stuff them back in the cylinder to check the end gap just for curiosity. Can help judge taper.
Don

In one pic you can still see the cross hatch pattern, do you plan on re-honing the cylinder? Might want to with new rings, I'd also do like Don suggested & put them in the cylinder I check the end gap.

Does the waxed weights make the tractor go faster Noel, less wind resistance?? Pretty soon you'll have to take her out & get her dirty. Dirty girl, dirty girl

Did you check to see if it was worn egg shaped?

I’ll do a little more looking. But I’m not getting into a rebore. From what I can see so far it’s in good shape. But I’m not an engine mechanic and don’t have the tools to do some things. I did squesse the top ring into the piston groove with my fingers. And while not as good as what Don said to do, I can see, the rings are worn out. Thanks for the comments,

Noel.
