John Deere 140H3 engine removal.

What is a good method to hone cylinder. So it gets a good crosshatch. I maybe able to borrow honing tools, but if not, what’s a good home remedy. Thanks for you input.

Noel.

I don't know if you have anything similar up there, but Autozone lends out cylinder hones. Look up how to use them with a drill, plenty videos on Youtube. Works quite well. f you can't borrow or rent one, I'd lend you mine, but I think shipping would cost more than buying one!

So number two compression ring has an expander under it. The small engine guy I deal with told me that. This is why it’s springs out when you push on it. Won’t stay in the groove like the number one ring does. I’ve never seen an expander under a compression ring before. Parts are ordered should be here Monday or Tuesday. Had to get the piston too in order to get the rings. Places he deals with don’t carry old stuff like this any more, so once they are out of it , that’s it. No more stock. So I got the last piston and ring set. Coulda ordered on line. But I try to buy local, but if they don’t have it, and you need it. On line is the only way.

I bought my 3 arm hone at Princess Auto Noel. I’ve never done any yet but you use a drill on slow speed with your Choice honing fluid (many choices) and move the drill in and out. If the cross hatches are long go in and out slower if they are small go in and out a little faster, you want them at about 45 degrees I believe. This allows the rings to seat the best. Your not removing much material like boring.

A shoe hone is good but a ball hone can get satisfactory results too, Noel. I've managed to collect both types over the years. Get what you can afford or what you can borrow or rent! I've used brake fluid, solvent, and even kerosene when hard up before. You don't want it too oily or the abrasive on the hone won't cut well. I think a lot of folks use Marvel Mystery Oil too but I've never tried that. About all you're trying to do is "scratch" the cylinder surface with the cross hatch pattern, not trying to remove a lot of metal.

That compression ring expander is a new one on me too.

Got the cylinder honed and ready for new parts install, but stupid me, as normal. I knew the engine had been bored out, but didn't know to what size. The piston had faint marks as to its increase in size. It had 0 0. Could not see the middle number. I looked and looked, finally I saw what looked like a 2, so .020. any measurements I did showed .020. Now not have perfect measuring and my math skills just so so, I decided to order what I thought was right. Parts came. Went to put them in, wrong size, jumpins !!! So more looking and figuring. Had the part number of the piston that was bought 23 years ago, so put that in to google, comes up as a .030 piston. Shoulda done that at the first. Any way, more parts ordered, and of course can't return the other parts. So more decorations for the mantel ! All ready have a .010 tecumseh rod for a HH120, I believe, on the mantel for the last ten years. Hehe, bought it Jan3/11 and never used it, Jumpins !

Maybe you can sell the the .020 piston? Too bad six years ago when I did the re-power on the MF12G, you didn't have an .020 or .030 HH120 piston you mistakenly bought! I would have bought it from you and my tractor would still have the correct engine in it! They were made of unobtainium back then, don't know about now.

Ok so more screw ups, but that’s normal for me. Got new .030 over rings. All a round .020 ring end gap. Put rings on the original piston and put it in. All went well. Then I got looking at the Grenade gears. Forgot or never thought to look at them while piston was out. Any way, they were flopping around like a half dead fish. So, they have to go. Now, everybody has their own opinion whether they should be in or out. I chose out. So to get them out ya have to remove the crank ! Or at least, I had to. So they are out, crank and a few more things are either in or on the engine now. Will continue tomorrow.

Yep. More done after that post. Only thing left is the gas tank and hook up, battery and the muffler. Then after firing up and first break in, retorque the head, and then the rest will go on. Done !

It’s alive it’s alive. Started up just like always. No choke, no throttle. Sit there and run on idle. Put it outside and let it run at 2000 rpm for a while. I’ll retorque head tomorrow when cold.
