My MTD 990 project I’m rebuilding.

FYI... it is not advisable to run these small air cooled engines without having all of the engine tins in place... they are the cooling system and without them you run a very high risk of over heating the engine. Also... I dont see a fan on the front of the hydro unit.
I’m looking for a heat shield and bracket just haven’t located one yet. May have to have someone that has a Briggs 16hp to take a good picture and see if I can make one. I have the fan I’m not done working on the hydro waiting on one more seal.IMG_4001.jpeg

If the rear deflector is the only tin your missing then it would be fairly easy to make something similar that will serve the purpose... its mainly to deflect the hot air away from the fuel tank and battery.

Ive had 2 990s and a 995 but I prefer a manual gearbox for pulling so I have a '74 960 Columbia, most everything except the trans, rear wheels and fuel tank are the same... and Columbia tractors were built in Canada so they have a bit different grill

I thought you were looking for an axle?

Man I would like to see a Canadian model, do you have any pictures of it?

Had it since spring of 2011, has blade, snow blower, mower deck, 3pt, weighs 1193# as shown

Very nice! Man what a beast to be able to move all that wood like that! I see the grill it is different love those baby moon hub caps. I wish I had a mowing deck and blade for mine but out in the western states you don’t see these tractors much like back east. Well Sir thank you for sharing it looks like you have a work horse of a tractor there.

This is one I did a few years ago. Has air compressorIMG_1440.jpeg underneath and alternator to run booster pack. Red one is stock except for paint. Both have bent metal dash to replace plastic
This is the tractor I was I found on Facebook marketplace. Tractor was not running and my mistake was not trying to get it running before I started the tear down. Everything has been removed from the tractor to the last nut and bolt and take down to bare metal and primed and most is painted. Random pictures through out my progress I will post . I have a lot because that’s how I kept track of how everything went back together. So bare with me first time posting pictures may take me a bit

Nice tractors! Did you re-power the green one?

Did you re-power the green one?
Yes. It has a Briggs 16 hp twin cylinder. It was very close to a bolt in swap. I drilled 2 holes to get the 4 bolts in from the bottom. Driveshaft was perfect fit. Briggs came with the fuel tank on top. The air compressor underneath is an air conditioning compressor with electric clutch. It does about 3 cfm. I originally built it when working at a John Deere dealership. It was used daily for boosting equipment or using an impact in the yard. We put 1600;hours on it in 8 years. It was pretty rough after that so they gave it to me when I left. I later redid it and gave it to my stepson to use o his farm. The air compressor was replaced once. It was a core from a tractor that had a front seal leaking. slow leak didn’t matter for this use. I blocked off the oil passage in the compressor so that it didn’t put oil into the air stream.

y

ya mine is a 960... and I would not trade it for TWO 990s. Lolol

The fenders look similar to but are not exactly the same as the US built 990s
Does it have the 16 hp Briggs. I’m trying to help a guy here in the US that has one like yours but has never seen the type of grille you have. I’m trying to give him info based on what I’ve learned about the Columbia made tractors.

ya it has the 16hp, these grills are not common but I have seen a pic with one on a Yardman... cant say if it was original or not. Ive had several similar tractors but all had the more commonly seen grill with vertical bars.... Im sure they weigh about the same as my Columbia grill but I do much prefer the look of mine.

Does his tractor have the flat rear fenders like my Columbia?? those seem to be even less common than the grill.... they dont have the turned down edge at the back like your 990 will have and they allow for bigger tires than the standard 860/960 fenders.

Did you not have a 960 awhile back?? or maybe Im thinking of someone else.... most 990 owners consider the 960 to be the little brother but when you get to the tractor pulls thats NOT how it ends. Lolol... there is many things I like about the 990s but the 4 speed is a better puller.
