Need opinions. To buy or not to buy ?

That is the question. A fella I sorta know came to me this week and wondered if I wanted to buy his MF 16. I said I don’t know. I don’t needed it. And don’t really want it. So I told him I’d have to see it. It has a deck with it, only attachment. Deck needs welding he says. And the pto doesn’t work. My interest in it was the 16 hp engine. And maybe if it had a three point hitch.
So went to see it today. Tractor starts and runs. It’s in so so shape. No 3 point hitch. And the engine is k301 instead of a k341. That’s a drag. If I take it, we sorta settled on a $200.00 price.

What do yous think ?

Noel....you're really really good at fixing them up and making them look pretty.. ;)

My first thought was getting it up to par mechanically and flip it if there's a market for them where you're at. Tractors are tough to make any great money on though... IMO.. You wouldn't want to get a whole lot time and money in it..

The tins look to be in good condition. The plastic head light bezel could be a problem. How is the dash? Down side is not having the 16 hp engine. How bad is the deck? If tractor is a runner and decent shape that's not too bad. Looks like a good starting point. I like the style of that model. I would take it for myself. $156USD isn't bad.
Tractor data says 1975-1976.

Didn’t get to see the deck Rick. It was way under a bench with stuff around it. But I don’t think it’s to bad from what he said. I have a deck from my MF 14 that would be the same. Didn’t really get a good look at the dash. Any way it will be just a grass cutter tractor and won’t be a painted up tractor. If we get it.
Ya , Bill. You wouldn’t make much money on this one.

If you get it and then decide you don't want it.......I do have a birthday coming up.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

At this point in life I'd let it go. These projects always have a way of ending up being more work than I was counting on. At least that's the way it works around here.
I kind of agree with Chris now if it had the K341 16 hp like you are wanting that would be a whole different story, you just never know there might be a another Case in a shed just waiting for you to discover ;) I know you like the MH also Noel

I have about the same question about a GT as Noel asked about, the PK 1620 engine has 1400 hrs is startes and runs good has all the power I need but uses some oil (some was leaking from the CS seals that I finally got repaired) won't know till this summer how much difference that will make. But I just seen on FB market place a 1993 Craftsman GT6000 with a Kohler M18 for $550.00 the M18 is a bolt in for the 1620 and would really make it a 1618. An overhaul kit for the M18/20 is $250 to $300 which makes the GT 6000 a bit attractive, on the other hand that GT6000 looks pretty nice to pull the engine out and let sit

I dont get why you guys seem so down on the k301... they are generally considered to be the best K block to rebuild, I wont sell one for less than $200.
I’m not down on them Lance it’s just not what he wanted he said so himself. I have a K301 I’m rebuilding now out of my CC1250. I also have a MF12H that’s ready to paint and put back together. The old Massey’s are some of the best looking tractors out there. If he has a use or wants to flip the K301 then I would say but it.

My thing some what is, I like original tractors, that’s why I was interested in it. I liked the idea of a 16. And some what rare. Only made 1975/76. And was hoping for a 3 point hitch. But it doesn’t have that.

Noel

In my mind the 16’s have the power. 12’s and 14’s are really not rated right. I read some where a few years ago, and can’t find it again, that the k301 and k321 only have about one or less hp between them. The 12 makes quite a bit more than 12 hp and the 14 makes much less than 14 hp. Maybe that’s why Lance likes the k301. Around here the pullers like the k301 for pulling tractors. I think they can make the k301 rev easier than the 14’s and 16’s, when they build them for pulling.
Just my guess.

Noel

Well the main reason puller guys like the 301 is that there is plenty of cylinder wall left to work with when you bore them out... that plus you can add the higher compression head...... and you can end up with far more than 16hp... where as the 341 were pretty much bored out as far as they can go right from the factory... also, generally, the 241/301 have aged better than the 321/341... meaning most have simply not suffered as much from the wear and tear over 40+ years. Given similar hours of use over the years if you dyno a 241 and a 341 you will find they now have similar HP and in some cases the 241 will even read higher... part of that is due to the fact that MOST 341s were used in hydro tractors where higher rpms have been needed but the 241s were usually in manual tractors often running lower rpm.

I cant count how many K engines Ive had but I know Ive only had two 341s that I liked, one was in my LGT165/FEL and the other in a Snapper 1650... both were strong engines and noticably had very little mechanical engine noise which Ive found to be quite common in the 341s... most rattle like can of old nails.

On the other hand Ive quite liked most of the 241/301 that have come thru the shop, they rarely rattle and use ALOT less fuel but yet they still pull a plough or run a snowblower very nicely... even in hydro tractors.

Maybe just been my luck but those 341s have been a bad experience on several occasions.... meanwhile the best K engine Ive owned is still the k181 in my RaM... which, according to the guy who built it... showed 13.8hp on a dyno.

I understand that originality might be important to some people with some projects but where the 341s are concerned Ive found that good engines only come in tractors that have been meticulously cared for

When you say, no 3PT hitch, does that mean the machine from the factory was never equipped with one, or that the original 3PT hitch got discarded for some reason and you may find a universal 3PT to put on the machine. Puzzled by the take of no 3PT hitch comments here.
