Brought this gem home for a steal of a deal, $200. She’s rough don’t get me wrong, the hyd filter assembly is just sitting there for some reason, it leaks fluid from the cooler, it’s full of ATF, it hasn’t run in 4 years...

came with a pretty rotten deck which looks to be 60”? I haven’t measured it but it seems larger than my 48” case deck for sure. The tractor does have power steering but no other options like hitch or PTO.

wanted one of these for awhile, to bridge the gap between my 2 favourite tractor lines, the Case/Ingersoll’s and the Masseys. Didn’t think I’d ever find a 320 with PS but it found me I guess.

That is a big MF--no pun intended! I never knew Ingersoll made GT's for Massey at one time. What's the engine? That cutting deck looks as wide as the tractor is long! About what years were they produced?

Nice tractor, Mac!

I guess I didn’t realize so many were unfamiliar with these tractors! They must be quite rare everywhere. Here’s the original sales brochure. I’ll upload it as a PDF to the files section as well.

Looks like a good project.

I saw one listed on Craigslist a few years ago and it was more parts than tractor. I never looked into them any. Brochures were fun to look at it!

That tractor is going to be fun for you, Mac! Fixing and using it! Do you know about when they were made? I'm going to guess around 1991 by some numbers on the brochures?

Yeah 1991-1992 from what I can tell. I'm not sure what happened, why it was such a short run. I talked to the owner of an old MF dealer maybe 10 years ago or so, he's passed on now, but I remember him saying they had sold a lot of the little riders and 100 series tractors at the time but only a few 200 series and no 300 series. They sold Ingersoll for a short time after the end of the Massey branded Ingersolls, something the same, lots of riders, a few LT's but no GT's that he could remember. I actually picked up a bunch of 6018 Ingersoll brochures from him, still sitting on the rack at the dealership, they had been there 15 years or so at that time haha.

I ordered a used hydraulic oil cooler for it today off ebay for about $100 with shipping. I can still get them new from the ingeroll dealerships in the US for $275 but I'll try used first. Not sure when I'll put it on and try to get it running but figured I'd at least have it when the time comes.

Maybe they were just too expensive for most buyers at the time. Be interesting to know what they cost new and convert to current dollars!

Thanks for the brochure scans!

I have never run into anything for pricing on them. In 2011 I had emailed Eastman (Ingersoll) for info and pricing on the Ingersoll tractors, they were still in production at that point. I have the 2011 price list here.

A 4021, which would have been the equivilent of the early 90's 4020 and 320GTX cost $8525 (Base tractor).
Add power steering $589
RM60 mower deck $2730
Total $11,844 in 2011.

So we can use inflation calculator to guess that in 1991 that would have been $7170, and in todays money would be 13,849.

It also says that RM60 deck weighs 215lbs, and I believe it! lol

That's about on par with what the x700 series tractors from John deere price wise. Those have front and rear pto, hydraulics, power steering and all the goodies.

But my local dealer keeps only 1 or 2 on hand. You can get a 1023e around the same price and have more of a tractor.

The market for a super heavy duty garden tractors seems limited these days. My dealer tried to convince me to trade my x570 in on a new x730. He offered my 4k trade in and a discount because the x730 was a left over from 2020. But it still would have been another 7500 with tax to move up. Not worth it for me.

Yeah I don’t think the big GT’s are worth the money anymore the x700 is the only one still sold that I can think of off the top of my head. Sun compacts have really taken over with their added capability for not much more money. Especially when most are making monthly payments on them anyway.

I really can’t think of to many Garden tractors that are made any more. John Deere and Kubota I guess. But the sub compacts are the thing now. 4 wheel drive big advantage. Good working loaders. 3 point hitches, And capable of 4 and 5 foot snowblowers, nice working tillers and other attachments. But a lot of the sub compact tractors have about the same or in a lot of cases less ground clearance, than some of the older garden tractors. Not that it matters a lot, but I’m hoping that I can get my 446 Case working reasonable so I can hill potato’s with it. Most of my garden tractors range between 7” to 11”, with the Case being 11”. Some sub compact tractors are only 6.5” clearance. The 11” clearance would allow me to hill longer as the plants get tall. And maybe do some woods work with it. Sorry for the long post, seems I just got rambling on and on. Hehe. My 2 cents worth.

Most people want to spend as little as possible to mow their grass. Then complain when 2 to 4 years later the tractor is dead because they bought too small a tractor for their property.

My dad's buddy bought a John deere 100 series from lowes to cut his hill property and drag around wagons of mulch. Transaxle went out around 150 hours.
