New Here

Hi folks,

I'm new here. I've been checking the forum out here and there for a while. I'm in search of a new (old) lawn tractor. I had a Craftsman that I bought new 13 or 14 years ago, and for the most part, has treated me well, and certainly doesn't owe me anything. I would like to find an older model (no specific brand thqt I'm loyal to at the moment) something solid, that I can work on a little and holds up well over the years. I'm very much open to any suggestions, and definitely enjoy reading and learning here, so I thank you for your expertise.

Welcome. Enjoy the hobby and the great people here. As olcowhand said there are many different brands and types out there. Good luck.

If I were in your shoes and know what I do today, one of my first options would be a Wheel Horse. Something in the 12 to 16hp. range. Very easy to work on. Lots of parts out there on the rare chance you would need them. Next would be an older Simplicity as their decks make your lawn look beautiful. Then older Cub Cadets and Sears tractors are a good also.

I gotta say that at least my local IH dealer stocks almost any part for older Cub Cadet tractors. I love my old Bush Hog tractors, but being no parts except for rare NOS or occasionally good used parts, they aren't practical to really work hard. Wheel Horse are tough mowers and you can get some new parts and used parts easy to get. I've had most brands and IH, Massey, and Wheel Horse are my favorites to use in a practical sense. But of any brand I much prefer hydrostatic drive.

Thanks! I do love the look of the Wheel Horse. There's a few available in my area. There's an LT1100 available next town over for $200 that I was going to check out, it's 11hp though. Not sure on the year, but they say it's in good shape but needs a deck pulley and a spark plug wire coil.

The LT is a lawn tractor not a garden tractor and is built on a lighter chassis. For that reason I've steered clear of them. Might work OK for your purposes. If it's in nice shape $200 seems fair.
