Picked up a 1967 Power King today

Interesting your story about your Dad teaching you about making gaskets and that's how I learned my Dad taught me been doing it years, I'm trying to recall am pretty sure I passed it on to my 2nd son
 
I forgot to add, some of you may already know this trick, but this is how I make gaskets. It’s a simple process, where you lay your piece of gasket paper over the surface, and tap all around the edges with the round side of a ball pien hammer, the corners of the flat side work well for inside corners also. As for the holes, I find that a punch with a slightly convex end works very well. My dad taught me this when I was 6-7. Most kids get in trouble nailing their fathers nails into a board, I got in trouble using all of his gasket paper making washer gaskets! Haha!

Yeppers, been doing it that way for 48 years. That was so long ago, but I'm sure I learned by watching Dad do it.
 
So far, I haven’t used the tractor much since it doesn’t have a charging system and runs off of the battery; however, it has been great to leave hooked to my car trailer when not in use.

I found out last week that the county farmers museum where I did tractor pulls when I was younger, is doing them again. I may set this up as a pull tractor.
 
I got the pulley that I need for the generator off of the parts engine. With the porta power, the flywheel came off without too much issue. Once it was off, it was easy to then get the generator pulley off of the flywheel. I would have just switched the flywheel and all, but if I remember correctly the Kohler has a 1 1/8” shaft, while the Briggs has a 1” shaft.

I got the pulley in place today! While working on it I started to wonder why the pulley was not there. I concluded that the original engine had a flywheel mounted starter on the side of the engine, something happened to that engine and this one was put in, without that style starter. This flywheel came off very easily; I cleaned it up and applied some anti seize before installing the pulley in place. I also put some never seize on the crankshaft before putting the flywheel back in place.

Since I do not have it wired, I used a set of jumper cables to test it, and it spun very well. When I decided to call it a day and drive it around back, it would not start. Upon further inspection it does not have any spark. The positive coil wire has a crimp like wire but that doesn’t seem too sturdy. I suspect this may be my issue. I hope to put the voltage regulator on and require it tomorrow, I think that will solve my spark issue.

When I took the plug out to check for spark, I noticed that the head has been helicoiled, and the coil was still on the plug. The threads for the helicoil are also in bad shape, I just ordered a head gasket and will swap the head with another when it comes.
 
I got the wiring hooked up! A few years ago when I got out of tractors and more into trucks, I thought that the simplicity wasn’t enough to stimulate me; now, I appreciate that simplicity and can rewire the tractor in a very short period of time. There isn’t much to show, but I have a picture below. The tractor is now charging, and starts with the button! I am very pleased.

Good deal! Not being familiar with PK's, I've never see the starter/gen set up like the PK's are. Quite a job to replace the starter belt!

Yes it is a task to replace! The later models with starters on the block still had the hydraulic pump (if equipped) in that location. Often on PKs when people change the belt, they tie a spare belt in out of the way so next time, it is already in place. I am going to replace it with a link belt.
 
I picked up a new seat today, and got it mounted. I also swapped a set of 26-12x12 tires on in anticipation for the tractor pull Saturday. I have a set of 8 inch tires I may put on to even out the tilt, although I have not decided. I am not sure if I will switch the rear tires and work the tractor between pulls, or what I will do. I also do not have any 8 inch weights, which I have lots of 12 inch weights.

Last week I ordered some delrin stock to make a steering column bushing. The bushing came out pretty well, I think. It has no play anymore, and was a fun little project on the lathe, I will post more pictures and details in the lathe thread.
