Potatoe Bugs

Has it been cooler and wetter than last year?
No Chris. We had a lot of frost the second and third week of June last year. But may maybe less rain last year.
I think they are just out to get me. Hehehehe.
Last week the bugs were bad. But the bugs are very early this year by about three weeks.
Strangely, we had very very few June bugs this year. Some years we call them May bugs. Because they are out early.
Normally in the evening and nite, when you have the lights on in the house or garage, they would be banging off the screens trying to get to the light. Not this year.
Do you have June bugs in your area. ?

Yes we do. They make such a pleasant sound when they bang into the window screens.
We've been getting a shot of rain every day so haven't been able to hill the potatoes a second time yet. Would like to get out there before the weeds get started.
We do have something going on that hasn't happened before. My wife said there are flies eating the strawberries. Usually it's Robins but most of them died during the late snowstorm.
You ever heard of such a thing?
So bugs are less again. Can’t figure that out. But that’s good, for now. One garden the potatoes are showing much improvement. The other garden not.
Have to wait and see what kind of crop I get. Still 2 1/2 months, or so, of growing yet.

Give the bugs a helping hand with the sunburn today, it was hot today. Thankfully.
Any way. Bugs aren’t to bad. I’m kinda surprised. Maybe 20 bugs. Hopefully it stays that way. Jumpins, last year I’d have 20 or more bugs per plant. Every day. Only been doing the sunburning every third day or so.
One garden is doing reasonably good and the other not so good.

Potatoe bug sunburning 101 lessons.
Find bug, put torch about one to two inches away from unsuspecting bug, have torch flow on high, click spark and ignite fuel, only hold flame on bug 1/2 to 1 second, shut flame off. End of bug. Go on to the next bugger.

No bug problems but the weeds are trying to take over. Was just about dry enough to get after them with the tiller when we got another .28" of rain last night. Will go in the morning -IF we don't get another shower or rain tonight. Will go around the vine plants and tomatoe's with the weeder first, then use the tractor & tiller.
Chris, I would say yes. Just like a June bug. But I’m no expert on where they come from. Once there out they multiply faster than rabbits. Up to four or five generations in a season.
Shorty, I found potato bug eggs on a weed leaf beside the potato plant. First time I ever saw that.
