Sawdust’s Garden 2022

I pulled all the carrots a few days ago. I cleaned and sliced them then Carol canned them in quart jars and ended up with 13 quarts. They done better than I thought being the second planting. I picked another half bushel of tomatoes Carol made some salsa with these. There’s not much more left. I cleaned up the cucumber vines and took down the fence. I love Fall but I get sad seeing everything gone in the garden. Next up I want to clear out the tomato vines, peppers, and okra. We have our first heavy frost tomorrow followed by a freeze warning on Sunday so Monday might be a good day to do a quick till then again when I cover it with leaves. So many things going on right now I don’t think I’ll have time to add any cow manure until spring.

We are in about the same boat. Made the last harvest trip this afternoon. Got about 3/4 5gl pail of bell peppers. Darn things are still blooming. Couple hands full of Egg Plant. About a dozen ripe tomato and 5 or 6 nice big green ones for Carolyn's fired green tomato. Dug the 8 Sweet Potato hills this afternoon and got about 3/4 of a 5 gal pail full. Set it all in the back of the Ranger in the garage for this evening. Will go the clean up tomorrow. I have a 5 gal pail with several 1/2" holes in the bottom I use to do a pre-wash on the ground crops. Will finish up in the basement in the utility sink that drains into the sump.

I missed not putting any sweet potatoes out this year. We had some good ones last year. A big baked one with butter right now would be good. My dad brought home a whole pickup bed full of heavy duty plastic parts bins about 16x24 several years ago from work. They are like a milk crate. We have had so many uses for them. That’s what I use to clean the veggies in too. Glad to hear your Ranger is running good.

WE have an old double sink under a tree near the house at the corner of the property we use a lot for the smaller veggies through the summer. Can reach it with about 30' of hose. Was always going to make a coupler to hook the hose to the faucets but that never materialized, like a lot of other things around here. Carolyn does a lot of trading at the neighborhood center. She brought home a small bag of sweet taters the other day they were wanting to get rid of.

I have one of the old concrete double sinks I salvaged. Carol still wants a she shed built and wants that near her shed for the same reasons. Like you so far it hasn’t materialize d.

I picked the last of my green beans yesterday, cleared & turned the garden. Today was time to clear some of the flowers, etc., I used Cubby & the 17P cart to haul plants to the compost bins:

Well the 2022 garden year is over. I pulled all the tomatoes, peppers, pole beans, and okra out the other day. I put all the debris in the middle of the other garden to burn. A few years ago I put the debris in the compost bins and the following year we had cherry tomatoes and cukes coming up everywhere. I’ve loaded up the raised beds with grass clippings. I’ll be mulching and bagging a lot of leaves this week and that will go into the garden. I normally put a load of cow manure in also but I’m not sure if that will happen this year. I loaded the other garden up with chicken manure and bedding. Seeing everything gone is kind of sad for me but it was a very good year and feeling really blessed. Praise God!

If the wind ever quits blowing when it is not to wet from heavy dew I want to burn mine to kill the weed seeds for next year. May put a bunch of leaves on it and till it in.
We just got hit with a permanent burn ban indefinitely the other day. I’m going to let the pile sit even if snow is on the ground.
