Two today…

Wow,
I had forgotten about those. Not to be confused with the starter switch on the floor....
Have had both. Used to heel and toe the gas pedal and the starter switch. Also some had a throttle on the dash instead of doing the heel/toe.
Back when they first moved the dimmer switch to the column there were several incidents with people getting their foot caught in the steering wheel. :p

All I can tell you is the throttle cable was used a lot in old American cars and trucks before automatic chokes. A person could open the choke and pull the throttle to keep a fast idle to warm up the engine. Farmers and ranchers also used throttles as idle was too slow to do some chores like feeding cows. Many of those folks worked alone so they would set the throttle ad a desired speed, get out and jump in the pickup box to throw out feed. International pickups even had steps to get out of the cab and into the box without touching the ground.

My '55 had the throttle cable but I went with a more modern carb so it is just for looks now. It was also originally a stomp start truck.

I don’t want the computer controlled junk either, or the unnecessary options most new ones have. Just more stuff to break, and it’s usually not cheap to fix.
I agree with you 100 percent Nick! It IS more stuff to break and more expensive to fix. A prime example is my moms 2006 Jeep has a navigation radio and while the radio works, it does not light up so she can’t see what channel it is on or anything…. And while I love the car itself, I don’t have to worry about that with my 1998 Dodge. I too don’t need or really care for the latest and greatest gadgets either, just plain and simple for me.

My 30 DeSoto has the manual choke and throttle control. I for one like it. I did remove the foot starter control with the engine swap. No electronics and no computers. Originally only had one 30 amp fuse for the whole car. Gotta love simplicity. I've been able to use June Bug for running short errands lately and really enjoy every moment. Even when it's near 90 with high humidity there's nothing like 4 windows down, 40 mph and an elbow hanging out the window to put me in a good mood. When the Commies blast us with electronic warfare They are not going to stop JB. ;)

Jeez that radio issue sounds like the new Ford pickups the city would buy at my former job. The radio would keep working but the LED screen would go blank within a year. No navigation or anything. They were "Fleet" trucks so built pretty crappy. The only one that didn't when I retired was a 4 or 5 year old F550 flatbed. All the 1/2 and 3/4 tons did.

My 48 Willys had stomp start and the throttle cable. The cable made sense to me as it had a pto. Sure is no reason to get out of a moving Fiat, though I guess it could drive itself away from you if it was on fire... My first vehicle was the 48 Willys. I bought it when I was 13. It was old and worn out, but I loved that thing. Rebuilt the engine........twice.
