What not to do. 67 Sears Suburban

I snagged this 67 factory recoil start Suburban a few months ago.
I haven't messed with tractors in a couple of months to speak of so it has sat under cover since I got it.
I didn't even really take time to look it over yet.
The one thing I did notice was the head issue.
It looks like somebody stripped the plug hole in the head.
Their solution was to bore out the hole bigger and retread it for a bigger plug.
Well that didn't work so much. The valve hits the wider plug.
So I will most likely swap a good head on it and check the valve.
Once fixed I think it would clean up and show nicely with the sicklebar on it.
But with my backlog right now it could be spring before I could get to it.

I've got a good head for an HH120 if they interchange, Jim. That's a nice looking tractor! Now I know what year cutting deck is laying out in a shed. It was in the scrap trailer at work years ago and I couldn't stand to see it scrapped. All I knew is it was an old Sears! Is it 42"?

I might have to take you up on that when I get to it DAC. Yes 42 inch.
These decks mow very nice or with mow deep heavy stuff like a bush hog.

Before you change the head there may be an easier fix.

Find a plug that fits the head now. Remove the elctrode and porcelin so all you have is the threaded portion that goes in the head. Then chuck it in the lathe and tap the inside of the old spark plu base to accept the new plug. Yes your spark plug will be a little higher up but if you have a good magneto and good spark it will work. I did this on a Cushman that had an issue and it was a perfect solution.

The time involved is much less than the time and cost of pulling a head and replacing it and the gasket.

Just a thought. Good luck

If I had a lathe it would be quick and easy but I don't.
On the other hand I can swap the head in about 20 minutes so either way its an easy job whenever I finally get to it.
I still have the HH120 head if it will fit an HH100. Never scrapped that engine yet even though I have threatened to do it for nearly 5 years now.

DAC I did a little searching because even though I have had many HH100s and HH120s apart I couldn't remember if the heads are the same.
It looks like they are different.
Thanks for offering though.
What other parts are still on the engine ?
Is it a gear drive starter model or a Starter generator setup engine ?

About all that is left is the block but it needs bored and since no pistons are out there, that's why the engine got taken out. The head, part of the engine tins and the deluxe muffler dipstick setup still on it. I guess the crank and rod too and throttle/governor linkage is there too. It was a 1975 engine so it was a gear starter. Someone got that right away. Can't remember who all got stuff off that engine. I've got an HS100 in my MF8E but never thought to look and see if the heads were similar!
