15 hp Briggs and Stratton engine, HELP!!!

Ok, I know for a fact that this piece came off of this engine, I took it off myself. (Maybe that's the problem) lol!
Anyway, the darned thing doesn't line up with the bolt holes in the block. I've tried every hole in the block there is and it just will not line up.
So does anyone else have one of these 15 horse Briggs with the belt guard still on it that could take a picture of it for me? I'm starting to go bald on one side from scratching my head!
Many thanks to you for doing this for me, in advance.
Rick

Never mind, I am up too late working on this thing, can't see straight. After looking at the old onan engine and how the guard sits on it, I noticed that i was overlooking the bolt holes it's supposed to use because they didn't look big enough.
I need my eyeballs recalibrated!

Ok, so I found out what the setting is for the points on this thing, and I know that there's a timing setting for it as well, but unless I'm blind, the timing adjustment is not in the manual, #34645-270962, for the L head Briggs engines. The bracket that the coil mounts to has slotted holes, so it can be moved left or right to advance or retard the timing. I believe I have it in the original location, but I would like to double check it. I removed the bracket and cleaned and painted it, so the original marks from the screws aren't on it now.
So is there another place I can find this out?
This is a great manual, but there must be a companion manual that goes with it that covers all the regular maintenance. Because this manual makes no mention of how to set up the coil, other than the air gap. There's also an arrow on the flywheel, but I don't see what it's supposed to line up with. Is it the first leg of the coil or the second one? No idea!
Again, I need help!!!! Thanks to all of you who have assisted me so far, and to all who hopefully will assist me further. Your help is much appreciated.

Rick

EDIT: I just checked the piston position when the points first close, and it's exactly .50" from TDC. And the points open at .175" from TDC. Don't know if that's normal or not, but there it is.

Any pictures of the coil set up. Kohler k 321 engine's timing is set by the point gap. I don’t see how moving the coil would change timing. Just a guess. Coil just produces the power, the points control when the spark happens. ? I could very well be wrong.

Did you look a section 2, page 7. That has the timing part from what I can see.

I swear I looked at that section thoroughly twice, and never saw that picture in figure 17, but that's exactly what I wanted to know. I centered the bracket when I reinstalled it, but I wanted to be sure that's were it was supposed to be.
Thanks Kenny, I appreciate having your pair of expert eyes to catch things I miss.
Sorry to bother you with this stuff. I don't know if my eyes are getting worse or it's just because I'm trying to find this stuff on a little phone screen.
But I really appreciate your help. Thank you.

Hey Noel,
I'll get a picture or two of the coil setup on it today, just for verification.
I think Kenny has answered my question though, and either I'm blind, or it's just that I'm trying to work with this tiny little screen on my phone and I don't see everything that I need to.
Thanks for your input too, it's good to have multiple minds working on this. I appreciate the expert assistance because I'm far from being an expert when it comes to these little engines.
Many thanks to you.

Rick

I have a large computer screen to look at. Can't handle a phone screen unless I can find a 12" magnifying glass.

Yeah, that would be a big help to me as well.
I couldn't afford a computer and a new phone, and since you can do practically everything on these new phones that you can do with a computer, the choice was easy.

I looked at what Kenny sent you Rick. That’ll fix you up. I downloaded that manual. Took me a while to figure out how to do that but I did it.
Ya, if some thing needs to be found, Kenny is the fella that can do it.

I've noticed that! And very grateful for the help too.

Here's a picture of the coil mount. You can see that it's got slotted holes in it, which is why I was thinking that there's a specific location and it's supposed to be timed somehow.
But like Kenny pointed out in the book, you just mount it in the middle. So what's with the slots then? Lol!
I don't know and if it runs, I don't care, I'll be happy.

IT RUNS!!!!! WOOHOOO!!!! I got my gasket and seal set today, well, yesterday now, and finished putting it together. I don't have it in the tractor yet, but I wanted to test run it before I mounted it on the tractor.
Only put enough gas in it to fill the carb bowl, as I don't have the correct gas tank for it. That's the one thing that wasn't on it when I got it.

But it runs great!! I want to express my gratitude to all of you who have assisted me with my questions and providing me with the information I needed. I really do appreciate it. Thank you very much.

Rick

And that is the reason I spend time finding things for folks! Glad You got it running!
Thanks Kenny,
It would have been a struggle without the info on the engine. I have an old book on small engines in general, but it doesn't give any specifics about this engine. So I would have had to guess at torque specs, and the counterweight timing, and I really didn't want to take the chance.
You have been fantastic, and so has everyone else here as well.
Now I'm having an engine installation party today, so if you guys could show up about noon, you can help me lift this thing from the table to the tractor. I'll supply the beer! Lol!

Rick

Kenny,
I don't know who handles the Sears manual site, but I did want to point out that the manual for the 72 Sears Suburban tractor has a duplicate of page 21, and no page 22. It's not a big deal, I was just looking for a bolt size and noticed that.
I have the original book for my tractor with the Onan engine, but it's going to be a little different for some things.
If you are the person taking care of the site and you need a copy, let me and I'll take pics of it for you if you want.

Thanks again,

Rick

I saw that hiccup in the pages. I probably have the other manual. Thanks, though.
