Got some of the garden planted between the rain showers today. 2 double rows of Early Frosty peas.

We tried something different this year, we didn't till. We broke up the hard ground with a cultivater and loosened the top with a disc. Definitely not as deeply worked as a tiller would. But if you are planting an inch or two deep, do you need 8" worked? Time will tell I guess.

One positive aspect of our experiment so far is that there is some leaves and grass mulch from last year on top yet. Which I hope will help with shading the weed germination. Tilling puts it all under.

The tilling loosens the soil for roots to go down when moisture is needed. Plowing puts it under, tilling blends it in. Be interesting to see how it works out for you. High was 43° F today. Garden is still way to wet to think about yet but got the 100 read Candy onions and 100 Everbearing Strawberry plants in the mail today.

Pulled the disc over the garden yesterday to break the crust and let it dry out more. Run the tiller through the smaller part today. Will run over it again and hope to get the 100 Red Candy Onion plants in tomorrow. Picking up 16 bags of top soil to put on top of the dirt that is in the 8 tractor tires we use for our raised strawberry beds. Going to paint them white this year hoping to reduce the dirt drying out so much from the sun. Starting over with all new plants this year. Others were about 12 years old or better.

Shorty , I did almost the same planting my peas and spinach the other day . Had the 6 tine spring cultivator on the tractor and just went back and forth a few times and leave the rest of the garden for when I have more time and it's dryer

I have a PK tool bar that I was running with 3 shanks. I wonder if going to 6 shanks would loosen the top better.

Another evening of planting. Norland and Superior potatoes. 10 pounds each. Thinking about trying to use a few leftovers from last year's crop as seed. Also got a couple rows of beans in. Yellow and green.

Got back from a road trip yesterday afternoon so put in the 100 Rec Candy Onion plants we got in the mail a few days ago. This morning I think it will be the Radish, Lettuce, Beets and possibly some other row crop. Looks like the rain will be holding off for a while so may as well put it in. Don' plant any peas or beans as they will not do anything for some reason. Might get a hand full of pods off a 30' row so not messing with them. Going to put a short row of potatoes in though. I have a single wheel type planter (Don't remember the name right off) that has worked real good the last few years. No bending over at all. 2 stakes with a string between and run the planter under the string and the row is planted. The wheel looks like a plate with a 5/16" rod around the outside.

Turned over good. Watered the rows I planted the other day. We need a good rain. If not will have hook the sprinkler up I guess.

The rains didn't make it here so will have to water today. I don't think I have ever watered a garden in April before but the ground is to dry to try to plant anything in or what is planted to grow. 45° this morning and overcast so will wait till it warms a bit and the wind is to die down. Have about 30+ plants to put in.

I'll be planting mine after May 4, best signs of almanac for the veggies I am planting.

We used to go by the sings a lot but when the sing was right the weather and/or ground wasn't so we just plant when it works out best all around. Usually have twice as much as we can get rid of anyway. Goats live high on the hog when things start ripening.

Mom and Dad always plant by the signs. And we all go by the signs when any of us have to have surgery, I made that mistake once and I'll never do it again if I can help it.

Planted our potatoes, onion sets, peas & a couple varieties of beans over the weekend. Badly need to get the tomatoes & Marigolds started in the greenhouse now!

If a person really gets into the sign thing it can control your whole life. Not ready to go that far just yet.

Found some of the white Candy Onions so those 50 plants will go in the ground today. Brush painted the top of the tractor tires white last evening so will put the top soil in with some fertilizer, then put 5 new plants in each tire with mulch later today. Have 8 tires and 50 plants so a couple will get an extra plant. Will spray the sides (actually the tread) of the tires later, hoping the white will reflect enough heat to keep from drying the ground out so fast. These are full size tractor tires, like 11.50 x 38, 15.5 x 38. Much easier to maintain the bed with them off the ground 12-15".

I plant those Frosty peas as well, early and very tasty. My garden is still too muddy to cultivate but the west end is a little higher/dryer and that is where the peas will be going this year. If things go as planned around here today I'll be putting some peas in this afternoon. Frost forecast for the weekend but it shouldn't hurt the pea seed any. I'm getting anxious to be in the garden.

We have tried Peas and Bean different times/places and they just do not do anything but some green tops. Carrots get a worm in them so don't bother with them either. Put another 50 onion plants, 16 cabbbage, some broccoli and cauliflower plants and couple egg plants. Also put 4 tomato plants in so the big part of the garden is in. Have the muskmelon, watermelon, and Big Moon pumpkins and mini gourds for the granddaughter later. Tired a different pepper plant this year. It is multi colored. Anxious to see how they produce. We use a lot of peppers when making relish.

We plant beans along 60’ of fence. They do quite well. Wife is planting her new raised bed.
I installed helper springs on pickup as Toyota leafs have always bottomed out under minimal weight, springs too soft right off the shelf IMO
