6hp Craftsman Power Unit Restoration

Hi Everybody,

I got an update on the tractor. Now going back to yesterday I took off the fender fasteners except for one because I can’t get at it without taking the transmission out, I also took the shackles off the rear axles so I can take the transmission out, and I also took the transmission protection shield off too. Here are some before and after pictures, more to hopefully come soon….

The band doesn’t look too bad, clean it all up should be ok.

No it doesn’t look that bad like you said. I’m gonna have to look at it again but I think there’s some type of rubber on the J hook lookin thing and that don’t look too good, it looked cracked when I looked last so I’ll check it out and probably replace it. I don’t know yet. Oh yeah I’ll definitely clean it (and everything else) up in the parts washer, sandblast them, prime, and paint them.

Looks like you may have gotten a jack and jackstands for Christmas, Eric!

DAC

Do you mean the little black and red hyper tough jack, and the black and red hyper tough stands Dac? I actually bought those myself from Wally World about a year ago. I like the stands but DON’T like the jack, the jack hardly jacks anything up to do anything. To me it’s useless and I was actually thinking about selling it at one time, but I decided just to keep it on hand in case I ever need it. You know how it goes, you get rid of something then later down the road you say “I wish I kept that”. Thank the Lord I ain’t needed it yet, but we mainly take it with us on the road when we go to tractor shows anyway. I also bought a big 3 ton jack and another pair of stands at harbor freight on black Friday weekend for a pretty good deal, and so far I’m thrilled with the jack. I haven’t tried the stands yet, their still in the box.

Hi Everyone,

I worked on the tractor again tonight after I got home from my kidney dialysis before the big snowstorm comes tomorrow. Now that there’s no engine or transmission in it and its significantly lighter, I can actually flip it over now. Today the right side foot pedal and the brake and clutch assembly came off, and boy was it a bear to get off too. It fought every inch of the way. Both of the keyways didn’t wanna come out easily so we put some heat on em and they came out, and one of the little tiny I believe set screws didn’t wanna come out either so we had to drill it out if you can see in my 3rd picture. Im SO close I can “feel” it, but anyway this is all for now. Now I can move onto the steering. More to hopefully come soon…..

Also as a side note, I been in contact with Peter from TractorData recently to send him some pictures of our tractors for his website and he wanted to know the model number of my engine. So I sent him these. Here are some pictures I took of numbers on the engine, the shroud plate, and the tractor itself outside instead of cramped up inside the shed. More to hopefully come soon…..

Hi Everybody,

No real update on the tractor since last time as I have not worked on it since then. However, I put some WD40 on the front steering components to hopefully have them come off easily when I plan to take them off. I also decided to clean the 15 years of dirt and dust off the center information plate that goes below the dashboard in front of the seat in the middle of the tractor today too. I used Cherry Bomb, Fabuloso spray, and a light wire brush. I know… it was probably stupid and wasteful to use both, but I did anyway. I did all of this because I want to get my other information plate for my 10 horsepower Craftsman remade because I got yellow paint over it and its looking faded anyway, and I wanted to give the 6 horsepower one to whoever makes it to use as a guide on what goes where. (If that makes sense.) I cleaned it up and I am not too happy with how it looks… granted it looks better than my 10 horsepower Craftsman one but not by much, so it looks like I’m gonna have to have both of them remade instead of just one. I was thinking of going to a custom t-shirt print shop in town to see if they can make them. This is all for now…..

Hi Everyone,

No work done to the tractor since last time but I just wanted to let everyone that I went to tractor supply today to get a new 2nd woodruff key for the tractor because I took 2 out of the foot pedal and clutch assembly when I took it off, BUT then I ended up loosing one. After buying it and bringing it home I decided to measure it up and compare it to the old original one, which is in the last 2 pictures. In the very last picture the key on the left is the new one still in the package and the one on the right is the original one.....

Hi Everybody,

Here is the latest update on the tractor. I worked on it today since it was a beautiful sunny 60 degree day and took the axles, the steering link, and the middle stabilization bar off. I’m not too sure what else I’m gonna do to the tractor next, I think I might be done… but knowing me I’ll probably find something but who knows maybe not. More to hopefully come soon….
