Saw I have, which has not been going for a few years, I got going. Will see how it works tomorrow in the wood. It’s an XP 88, I think. Heavy, hard to pull over, but starts good. Had trouble before with it not idling. That’s why it got put away. And it’s very heavy to use. Ya don’t go into woods and do any limbing with it. Or I don’t any way. Blocking saw so they say. 6 hp I was told. Traded a lawn tractor for it a number of years ago. Son and I thought, we just gotta have that !!!

288XP maybe? Big old thing, be 88cc 6.1hp. Biggest saw I had was a 372XP, 71cc, 5.5hp. Sold it, too heavy for what I do. I’d rather a small light saw, but the 372 was great for bucking.

Well it worked to cut. But like all chainsaws, it won’t idle right and quits half the time. But when cutting it got no trouble goin thru a log. Maybe look into getting a carb.

I would spend a few minutes squirting carb cleaner through carb before getting the tools out. So has been my experience, you obviously have cleaned the air filter.

Noel, I hate to break it to ya but that saw is definately not a 288xp
It is a 266xp . The airfilter cover is WAY TOO SMALL the 288 has an airfilter like an old Kohler with a wingnut holding it down!
The 268xp,272xp also have a raised cover for a larger Filter and carb setup.
Yours has 2 aluminum nuts built into a fine meshed whitish colored filter correct?
It could have a big bore kit on it too? As the lower cases were very similar for a few years.
If it doesn't want to stay idling it probably needs crank seals. Common on those saws after they turn 10 plus years old or about 1.5 million board feet cut..or 1000 cord of wood..

Yep has the nuts to hold on the whiteish coloured filter. In any case, what ever it is, it will cut wood with no trouble. When working. Measuring the bore and stroke would tell me what it is, right ? If I ever have it apart again.

It should. I have one of those with at least 10 million feet on it, probably more, as mine is the 266 SE ! Even older than yours.they are 65 cc saws and yes.. they will cut!

My boy gave me a Sears store return a few years ago. Showed no use what so ever. Somebody tried to tighten the chain without loosening the bar. Of course it broke the tab off that move the bar in and out. Made anew piece, put it in and it runs and cut good. Big heavy bucking saw only. Actually got two that way, on ended up out in Maryland to Carolyn's Son.

Skyrydr2, took some pictures of the saw you say is not a 288 but a 266. Rating plate shows 288 ? So I don’t know what to think.

I see the engine mounts that are out side the frame (dead giveaway to big bore engine) you do have a 288, it is the early version because it has the small airfilter /top cover.
Nothing wrong with that beast! You just need to get after the crank seals and make sure the carb is tight and isolator between carb and cylinder and gaskets are good and not cracked. Those 85cc engines were screamers! But blew up easily too! Make sure it doesn't run lean.

Ok, thanks again. We only use it once a year to do blocking. Hope fully get it fixed up for next falls work. No goin into the woods and doin any limbing with that saw. Hehe.
